@amz. I actually beg to differ on that point. Our pulling power has never been that great, even at the peak of our powers on the pitch (+- 2005-2010). We were rejected by Obi Mikel, Hazard, Ronaldinho, Robben etc etc. when we had the “pulling power” of SAF and just about guaranteed trophies.

Actually, to the contrary I would argue that our pulling power is even stronger with Mourinho at the helm. Pogba, by his own admission, rejected offers from Real Madrid and Barcelona to re-sign for us while Mkhitaryan also rejected an offer from Arsenal.

Spot on with being rejected hatters, and if you look at where those players went to, who rejected us for other English clubs, you would argue that the reason they went there has seen the tables turned with these financial figures. but as you say, we’ve never had carte blanche wrt signing players.

Beat me to it Hatters. For some reason everyone buys into the myth that we’ve previously been able to sign whoever we’ve wanted. I can’t think of a single player we’ve signed who before he joined us was amongst the world’s best players. Veron is probably the closest thing we’ve had. Sure, the history and traditions of the club have some sway but not as much as what most make out. Sadly, compared to the other elite clubs, we fall down badly on Manchester being an undesirable place to live in comparison to London, Munich, Milan, Madrid, Barcelona etc.

Other players to reject us too are Lucas Moura and Harry Kewell (although I can’t say Liverpool is a more attractive place to live). Didn’t Kewell think Liverpool were on the way up at the time and Utd were on the way down?

Since Sir Alex retired though we’ve been able to attract players like Di Maria, Falcao, Zlatan, Mykhitaryan and Pogba.

some good points lads. I think jose is a major pull for utd but they can offer crazy wages aswell. Aresnal wont break the bank for wages either will liverpool.

Big summer for Arsenal and their wage structure with Ozil and Sanchez reportedly after big pay rises. It would appear a backward step if they refused the requests and the players ended up leaving and a negative sign to other first team players, fans and future signings.

Whilst Liverpool generally won’t match massive offers they are no paupers and Suarez was apparently on £220k per week after his last new contract there.

The big impact will be what happens in China imo. The wages on offer there dwarf anything Utd can offer. It will be interesting to see how the PL reacts.

@sean. Spot on mate. I guess that is why we need Woodward to keep that revenue rolling in so we can compete/beat the wages on offer from clubs like Real Madrid, Manchester City, and PSG.

alfie, ye very intersting about Aresnal. They have the money dont they?
saurez was on 200k. We dont have anyone on that now . Our highest paid player is either milner or sturridge on 150k. Next is 100k for henderson etc.Utd have a few players on 200k, 300k or whatever so its very hard to compete with those wages but i do agree utd have more then wages to attrct players.Jose being one. Its FSG way. I think we can go to that 200k mark again if we really wanted to but i dont think we could pay many players that wage.

To be fair to the Suarez contract, I think at the time Pool realized he wasn’t going to stay for the entire length, knowing that they would be selling him for a huge profit in another year or two. Worth it mind you, don’t get me wrong, and let’s face it, he was worth every penny…

I take my statement back! You guys are right. I guess it was just the magic of SAF. Definitely the greatest manager of all time in my opinion.

Interesting points being made re wages, pulling power, and how much clout the manager has.We can’t pay those sort of wages and we don’t attract the superstars of world football, but through encouraging young players and scouting lower leagues for talent we have found a recipe that seems to be working.I have to take my hat off to Mo who is doing an incredible job at Spurs.
I’m hoping we keep our players for the foreseeable future and if we can it could be interesting when we have a 61,000 capacity ground.
It can be done and I’m amazed that clubs like Utd,City,Arsenal, and Liverpool who should attract the best young talent around, never seem to give them game time.
Just look at that those two young Everton lads last weekend,I wonder how much they are on???

Thing is lads, would Ronaldo or Bale leave Real Madrid for United ? Personally I would rather earn the same money in a hot country capital with more style and culture than soggy grey Manchester

I can’t see any top player in their prime leaving Madrid or Barca to come to the PL.

Mind you Di Maria, whilst not the top player at Madrid, could be considered a top player and was at his prime when he moved to Utd.

But that highlights other factors. Only players will leave those sorts of clubs under certain conditions and most key players wouldn’t consider it.
