Cesc Fabregas could once again become a target for Manchester United should the midfielder be deemed surplus to requirements at Chelsea this summer.

The Daily Mirror reports Jose Mourinho is keeping an eye on the Spaniard’s situation at Stamford Bridge, with incoming boss Antonio Conte said to be tracking four central midfield players.

Conte is reportedly refusing to give up on Roma’s Radja Nainggolan, while N’Golo Kante and Portugal pair Joao Mario and Andre Gomes are also on the Blues’ wishlist as they seek to strengthen their engine room.

This, according to the Mirror’s story, has put Mourinho on alert, with Fabregas remaining a favourite of the new United boss, despite the Spaniard’s less-than-impressive form over the last 18 months.

Fabregas was targeted by United three years ago when David Moyes took over, but the former Barcelona star chose instead to sign a new deal at the Nou Camp before leaving for Chelsea in a £27million deal a year later.

Cman, personally I wouldn’t let him go and I certainly wouldn’t let him go to United but it’s all down to Conte.

If this interest from United and Mourinho in Fabregas is true though it seemingly puts to bed the view that Fabregas was one of the leaders of the alleged anti Mourinho revolution.? Cheers buddie 999

On his day, Fabregas can open up any defence and create a chance from nothing. Unfortunately as we have seen he never seems capable of playing for a full season

I had Conte down as using Fabregas as his Pirlo so must admit could not see him leaving

However, all the reports in the press seem to have us linked with only midfield players all of whom have an energy about them rather than potentially creativity like Fabregas. Whether that is to replace him totally or to compliment him remains to be seen

If we do sell him then we should expect to receive a decent fee. KTBFFH

    Surplus? Not for me.

He loses the ball a lot and this is highlighted / jumped on because of his lack of ability to win it back frequently but his quarterback passing abilities far outweigh any defensive disadvantages in my opinion. He creates a lot of chances both directly and indirectly.

Players of his ilk are hard to come by.

The only benefit would be 200k+ off the wage bill and the large transfer fee we could demand but I would be reluctant for the present Chelsea to start basing decisions around short term financial gain when the main goal should be cementing our status as a regular top 4 side once again.

We aren’t able to buy players, so far only Batshuayi joining us. If the situation doesn’t change: we’d better not lose any of our existing players.
Having said that, I don’t think Fabregas is irreplaceable. Last season showed how inconsistent he was and everytime he played: our defense was exposed.

superfrankie – if what I have read about Conte is true then he is a hard task master and will expect players to follow his instructions and perform at a high level in all games

I could easily argue that is what any fan wants and expects but players like Fabregas and Oscar might find this more difficult to achieve…?

However, if it makes them raise their games and become more creative then possibly this would outweigh any perceived negativity? KTBFFH

It will be very sad if we deem Fabregas surplus to the requirement at this club, and replace him with Kante who is mainly Ramires type player. i’m not sure if this will happen because Fabregas at the moment is our second creative source after Hazard, even more creative than Hazard himself. there is no smoke without fire, IMO if we let Fabregas leave and replace with Nainggolan and Kante, who are both similar players. Nainggolan for me only has that one shot which may go in or not, apart from that he is below average in terms of ball playing skills. i was once led to believe that he is better than Matic, but after watching him in the Euros, the one area that he is superior to Matic is that shot outside from the penalty box nothing else. while Fabregas can give that inch perfect killer pass to our strikers, that alone is priceless. but if Conte wants to get rid of him, the writing is on the wall, the will not be a shift from the tactics of our previous regime which was mainly defense oriented. in that case i see very little to cheer for what is in store for us.

1905 Hello mate. I agree with what you say about Conte being a hard task master but I think he could be very good for Fab and Oscar. Fab especially, just look at Pirlo’s latter years.

Oscar technical abilities and work ethic (which I personally rate highly) in my opinion will definitely be attractive to Conte. The trick is getting the right system to compliment them. Doubt both could start.

With that in mind, I still would not want to lose fab. He is world class.

Oscar, he’s been with the club for 4 years? And he still shows no consistencies.
No doubt his workrate is good. But in one match he is inspirational and other matches he is inept. We can’t lose players but Oscar really needs to show improvements
