We stuffed up last night and you’ve all highlighted the areas where we came up woefully short. This includes Contes selection decisions. I’m reserving judgement until after our game against Utd. Our team selection will seriously determine whether Conte has learnt his lesson.

    My team selection:
    Courtois – Azpi,Christensen,Rudiger – Zappa,Luiz,Bakayoko,Alonso – Fabregas,Morata,Hazard

My wild guess, knowing Mourinho, he would park the bus and expect a counter like he did against Spurs. That’s the reason I choose Fabregas instead of Willian or Pedro who rely on speed.

Once needed, Pedro or Willian would come in to replace probably Bakayoko who played during midweek. Even though Drinkwater is fit, for the match against Man Utd, we do need good passers, hence Luiz as DM.

Phwepsi, understand your frustrations with cesc but I like Aindro’s team and think the logic is sound.

With 2 centre mids behind him we get the best of cesc, when he is played as one of a pair it just exploits his weaknesses as you have rightly pointed out more than any one.

whoever the personnel, it will be a struggle Sunday, purely because the whole set up just feels wrong again, how is it the group of players are so short on confidence.
Here’s hoping we get a good performance Sunday three points, happy days.
    Need the fans on Sunday.

I think this back 3 formation has served its purpose and now its time that explore another formation like say 4-3-1-2 or 4-2-4 or even bring back 4-2-3-1. Everytime we win the league we don’t change the formation that served us. Almost every team in the league has used the back 3 formation this season. Teams has figuered ways to counter. Play 4-2-4 play Azpi at LB and Rudiger at RB. Luiz and Christensen at CB. Bakayoko and Kante at CM plus Pedro and Hazard at the wide forward areas. Plus Michy and Morata. So if that isn’t the case my team is 4-2-3-1. Courtois, Rudiger-Christensen-Luiz-Azpi, Bakayoko-Kante/Drinkwater, Pedro- Hazard – Willian, Morata. Also i have to say Courtois hasn’t progressed since he returned. The saves he had been making in his first season are no more. I’m concerned about the soft goals he is conceding of late. Look at the saves DeGea makes. The City keeper makes, Spurs keeper makes. I suspect at the end of the season its not Conte’s future that is in doubt. Courtois may as well be. Another one since Hazard has returned to the starting line up, is it me that thinks that way or we lost some balance in the team? Especially Morata who has scored only once since his return? Tough decisions need to be made. Because since his return alot of our players hasn’t responded well to his return. Morata, Fabregas, Alonso, Willian and even Pedro.

Chelseaman, a change in system to suit our current squad may be needed especially as the the rest of the league is getting accustomed to playing with and against a back 3.
Given how conte changed things around so effectively last year I have reason to believe he can do it again. I do not have any answers myself but conte likes 424 as well and it would be interesting to see, your selection for that system would be mine also, except alonso would replace rudiger and azpi would play on right

It looks like we are in the same school of thought. I also like to throw the wild card in to the debate. I observed this i don’t know if you may have observed it.Since Hazard has returned to the starting line up, large chunk of our squad has been under performing. Particluarly Morata, Alonso, Fabregas,Willian, Cahill and even Bakayoko has lost some of his early season form. Goals has dried up from Morata, Willian seems to have lost since Hazard has retruned, likewise Fabregas lost his early season form. I feel his return coupled with the loss of Kante may have taken some balance from the team.

Id agree about morata losing form but maybe his injury came at a bad time for him, as for the rest baky has been patchy alonso had 1 good game and the rest have been mud all season

Aindro – personally I would rest Bakayoko and go with Drinkwater but seems a reasonable team. Not the biggest fan of Fabregas but can see where you are coming from but at the same time I am the camp of Phwepsi – I think he has shot his bolt and really needs a break. KTBFFH

The papers are indicating that Conte still has the support of the board and my guess is that they are giving him every chance to come through the injury situation and see if the performances/results improve

Losing on Sunday is a distinct possibility especially if Kante is not ready (and I would not force him to play as some reports indicate)

If we did lose then I guess we would have to see if we cave in like we did in the second half in Rome, then that in itself may be a more damming image taken away by Roman and the board who would then have the international break to sit down and ponder their next move. I can fully understand struggling without Kante and the fact that a few of the “stalwarts” are out of form but I will never accept a Chelsea team not giving their
    all until the very end

For me, the mental approach has to be resolved and is something we were so good at and strong with last season. Why has that changed – no idea? Can Conte resolve it or is he part of the problem – don’t know? But IMO there is still an underlying uncertainty that appears to be eating away at the squad and is causing issues on the pitch..? losing on Sunday will be a sad moment but its not really that significant as we dont have any chance of the title this year, the title is already a 3 horse race between the 2 Manchester teams and maybe also Spurs, however we got to go all out to at least claim that 4th position. cause even that will not be easy, Liverpool and Arsenal cannot be under estimated to also grab that 4th place. The players that are out of form need to be dropped as that tactic works in most cases.

I think Not nice is right realistically we’re not in the title race and neither will we win the CL but I never expected us to win either even pre season.

By it’s very important we retain our CL place for next season no matter what Conte’s future no CL qualification will limit our transfer potential in next Summer’s transfer window.

I’m hoping that we see a real reaction on Sunday to Tuesdays result and performance in Rome from both Conte in terms of team selection and tactics and the players in terms of commitment and quality of passing defending and overall play.

Otherwise we will be treated to Mourinho at his worst!

It’s the contrary, what I just read 5 min ago is that RA is ready to sack Conte.

Aindro, given our history since Roman and our current form the speculation is unsurprising but whatever we read about Chelsea which may or may not be true we have to balance the story against the source and Marca are a very unreliable source.

I also saw the reports that Roman was ready to sack Conte but as I stated these eminate from Spain so potentially dubious. However, in the Sun today (am I allowed to say that…?) there is a similar article but stating that Marina was very unhappy with the capitulation in the second half and did not hide her feelings

The Fabregas interview with Linekar shows a different side of the picture so really no one is any clearer apart from the fact that Roman does not suffer fools gladly and will have no hesitation in firing Conte if he thinks it is in the best interests of the Club (and with Ancelotti in the wings that would make his decision a lot easier)

So my feeling is that the game on Sunday is a must win. Obviously we need it to stay in touch at the top and to get closer to ManU, otherwise we begin to look as though we are drifting. On the Conte front after losing to Roma in the fashion that we did, plus losing at Palace I think we need to put in a good performance and get the 3 points otherwise he will fall under much closer scrutiny

Expect a very tense close game I am thinking and just hope that the players respond to Tuesday and do both Conte and the fans proud. KTBFFH

1905, there was also an article by Darren Lewis in the Mirror yesterday that gave a completely opposite view to the Marca article and putting aside the fact that Marca are notorious for printing nonsense how would they be closer to what was going on at Chelsea than our own press here?

In respect of the Sun article I would be more worried if any member of the Board wasn’t angry with the second half performance clearly Conte was because he allegedly let rip at the players in the dressing room at the end of the game.

I totally agree with you though it’s not the loss or even the defensive errors and poor passing it was the complete lack of fight by the players once the second goal went in when they just seemed to give up and be going through the motions and that is unacceptable.

Personally I’m looking for the players to stand up and be counted on Sunday and whatever the result and whoever plays in whatever formation I want to see a totally committed performance from them.

I don’t think there is any chance of us catching City but ensuring a top 4 place must be a priority and we are just one point behind Spurs and just four points behind United both of whom are currently being hailed as title contenders whilst some of what you read about us would have you think Chelsea are facing relegation.

999 – I think because it was well publicised that the perception is that they gave up in the second half that they WILL stand up and be counted which is why I am going for 2-1 to the Blues

It seems that Conte laid into them verbally as well and apparently Roman has been at the training ground with no obvious rucks there either – so possibly showing his support for the manager which will also make the players feel they have something to prove

Must admit did not fancy the game at after Tuesday but warming to the task now and beginning to feel that little glow and flutter in the stomach. It will not be easy, Jose will make sure of that, but I just think that some players need to respond in a positive way. The return of Kante would also bring some welcome confidence as well (fingers crossed). KTBFFH

I think for the moment, for the sake of our own well-being :), let’s leave it to Abramovich and to Chelsea board whether they plan to sack Conte or not. Let’s just focus on the match, I believe this is the most important match we have considering our situation (and Man Utd’s situation). If we can win this, we’ll dent their confidence, we’ll shorten the gap, we’ll have our morale higher, etc etc.

lucky, phwepsi & CFC1905: contrary to Alonso, Baky is someone who gets used to play in Europe, he played twice a week already with Monaco last season. Based on this: I think Baky can start. And Fabregas, he’s only played for big teams, so he should not have problems with playing 2 times a week. So I still stand with my team selection.

notnice: contrary to what you said: this is a very significant match if not the most significant so far. Look at how much we’ll shorten the gap if we win.
