From reading latest reports on UTD’s efforts to off load unwanted players, it seems that UTD have made a rod for their own backs.
Its all very well offering a new signing a huge contract to attract the player to the club, but if the player doesn’t make the grade then UTD are stuck with the player as he will probably refuse to move to another club at a much reduced wage. This seems to be the case with both Scweinsteiger and Marcus Rojo.
Perhaps Woodward needs to look at this aspect of the club’s policy.

to be fair @concernedfan, that policy also ensures that if they do make the grade, then for someone else to buy them, they will also have to offer an enormous offer to utd for the player. That, as far as I can see, is the only good that comes from these ridiculous policies. I also think it shows a kind of weakness that our youth squad are being brought so far then sent out on loan because they can’t fit in to the first team. If our own youth training was good enough, then we wouldn’t need to splash so much cash about to try and keep us at the top.

I, personally think that a wage cap should be brought back in to create a form of equality throughout all football leagues. That was the reason for players like Anderson, Djemba-Djemba, Kleberson, Bellion etc stayed so long, we were paying such handsome wages for sitting their useless asses on the bench, greed proved a stronger pull to them than becoming the superstar they thought they were gonna be. I feel a club should be able to offer what they can afford to fifa and get approval for payin that as a maximum, regardless of players agents. Players agents are also a huge cause for concern regarding players fees and wages, this should also be looked at in my eyes.

Up until Mourinho joined, United weren’t a great pull for most players; with LVG and no Champions League football I would even say that we were a poor pull for the top players we needed. High wages allows us to compete on the transfer front – if we didn’t offer crazy wages, few big players would join us. Yes you have the United aura of being a historically big club, etc however how many players would be willing to leave the big clubs in Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, Munich, Turin (some nice cities) to come to cold, always rainy Manchester for no Champions League football and to have LVG treat you like a slave?

Once we become successful again and we get some continuity in our football then you will see that big players will actually want to come for the football rather than just for the wages. Obviously we will continue to pay through our teeth for most players however, under Mourinho, I think he knows who to buy to improve our club rather than just spending on big names for the sake of it (ala Schweinsteiger, Falcao, etc.)

@fergiesarmy – Mate, what is our problem? Are you one of these “fans” who can’t take a criticism / truth about your club in any shape or form? What exactly do you not agree with in my comment?

I understand why Schweinsteiger came. Because of his age it was obviously just one final pay day. Why Rojo commanded such a high wage is a mystery.

Reminds me of Winston Bogarde at Chelsea. I think he refused to leave because his wages were so high that he’d have to take a pay cut to leave. Assou-Ekotto has always said that football is just a job to him so he’s going to earn as much as he can.

It all comes down to the player. If money is more important than playing football then we shouldn’t be signing these players in the first place. Granted thats one of the reasons we lost Pogba and why we haven’t signed some of the big stars in the past but I would rather a player wants to come to OT for the honour of playing for Manchester United, not the nice shiny pay cheque he receives at the end of the month.

The high wages mean we have to reduce the fee such that the package (fee + wage) is affordable and interesting for the buying club. After failure at United no top club will want them. only lesser clubs with lesser funds available.

Schweinsteiger will go for a million and Rojo for 10m.

You reckon we can get ten million quid for Rojo Mac? I reckon Woodwood would bite a hand off for that.

Think it will all sort itself out with players and their wages, might take a year or two to sift througgh some of the rotten timber in the squad though. Those that want to play football will get their transfers and they won’t starve while those that fancy their money for nothing can train with the stiffs and Schweinsteiger.

TS7 – McNair went for almost 5m so at today’s prices I reckon any PL international player in his prime is worth at least 10m.

The solution probably is to sign a player on a five year contract but with the salary graded according to the time spent at the club. So in the first two years of the contract the player could be on a more modest wage, and if he works out to UTD standard then a new contract could be given at a higher pay level. If after two years it seems he’s not going to make the grade and UTD want to move him on then, then a high salary shouldn’t be an impediment to him joining another club.
The fact is Rojo is NOT worth what UTD are paying him and naturally he doesn’t want to take a pay reduction. So most PL clubs are not interested, neither are all but the biggest Italian and Spanish clubs. So UTD are asked to subsidise his pay for the remainder of his original contract with UTD, or else he stops at OT for another 3 years.
There needs to be realism in signing most players.
