are we really discussing vvd again already? We know he wants to come here but we made an absolutle shambles of this from day one. We had to apologise to soton for our behaviour. Its an absolute embrassment how we went about this.

this saga sums us up when it comes to transfers. Pathetic at times. We then ahve no plan b when we cant get him.

bingo, lovren is terrible. He had one decent half spell but his prone to massive errors a lot of the time. Our defence is an absolutle shambles. I agree on the full backs but why keep changing them all the time? The keepers aswell.

ive givenup on the defence. They are to stupid to play a high line. They dont communciate and havent a clue how to follow klopps instructions

We need two centre backs to have a defence worthy of a top team. Think matip gets a free ride from fans because he occasionally looks good striding out of defence with the ball but in my opinion he is poor. Lovren makes the more high profile mistakes but matip has far too low aggression and bravery for a centre back plus a poor turn of speed. Neither of them or any of our goalkeepers command or organise the defence.

matip is not slow mate but he is not aggresive enough. be interesting to see how he got on with a decent partner instead of the shite he has to play with at the moment

He’s got a quick top speed but his accelation is slow or maybe takes a second two long to read the situation. I was talking to a fc köln fan who watches a lot of German football obviously and he didn’t understand why we went for him, saying he just isn’t good enough for a top team.

    Bob…

Well Van Dijk was the top defender that wanted to sign, none of the other top defenders in Europe moved or were mentioned.

I agree with you threeps in that Matip has been really poor this season. He wasn’t that much better than Lovren in my opinion. However he has shown some flashes of brilliance, and it remains to be seen if he’ll be reliable when we have some leadership at the back.

We need a leader at the back at Jan, no more dilly dallying. Carra once said that the back four is like a team within a team, they move as a unit to cover each defender. You look at our back four and you see a disjointed unit. Like Sean said our high line is a complete mess, one defender maintains the offside position while another gives that away, no coherency whatsoever. Our defenders are too stupid to play a high line, and we need a leader back there to keep them in check.

treeps, that’s my view of Matip too a squad player perhaps in a title chasing side which is what Liverpool aspire to be.

so has matip just become a poor player in a few months? He was very good last year and i thinkwe only lost two gams inwhich he started. He was getting rave reviews and was badly missed whenhe got injured. He needs a decent player beside him. Hes not having a great season but he is our best centre back and we need some who can defend beside him.

people chnage their opinion far to quickly on players who are having a bad spell. He needs to be much tougher but he has shown already last season that he can handle it here. Ill give him much more time before writing him off as he has shown he is a ogod player

There’s a dearth of top quality centrebacks across Europe.
Gone are the days of a Vidic, Ferdinand, Terry, Carra, Hypia, Nesta, Maldini etc etc.

David Luiz is now considered top class. The preference these days are for defenders who are comfortable with the ball at their feet but many can’t defend.
It used to be the other way about, loads of good defenders and it was a bonus if they were good with the ball at their feet. The focus was an ability to defend.
Look across the Prem. How many centrebacks could match those I mentioned above?
Everyone is after the same few central defenders who can actually defend. However there is better out there than Klavan and Lovren.

It seems Liverpool are to continue to put all their eggs in one basket regarding DVD in January, and he is already being classed as the savior, but I wonder is he really worth it? None of the big clubs seem to be chasing him, Arsenal were loosely linked (OK Bad example) but why are the two Manchester clubs and Chelsea not pushing the boat out for him? Plus no other European big guns? Is he that good, or is he just the best at the level Liverpool are aiming at?

Nolu, VVD has made it public that he wants to move here which could deter others as they’d be worried spending 70 mill on a player not fully committed.

Bingo that’s because we tapped him up …. Fair play he wanted to then come.

As I understand it we didn’t tap anyone else up …

NOLU: Maybe because of fair play rules? Lukaku+VVVD that’s 150M on two players. City spent 225m a record for a PL team. Gone are the days where some teams could buy any players they want on a whim, and sometimes bought a player just because a rival was interested in him.

I get peoples views on Matip but I see a lot of qualities in him and alongside another good cb and take out both our fullbacks who have been poor (so when Clyne returns) I think he will show his true qualities. Half the time Matip is covering for Lovren and Klavan and Gomez.

That being said I’m not against 2 cb’s coming in and letting the likes of Klavan go. In fact I think that would be the sensible option when you add to the fact that Lovren is injured a fair bit and probably doesn’t suit the high pressing game we play.

I think teams knowing how to punish our disaster at the back has a lot to do with Matips drop in form. He is a bloody good player, surrounded by brainless fools that have no idea how to do what the manager is asking them to do.

Utter shite being talked about Matip. He is a good player suffering because he’s having to carry dross. Paulo Maldini in his prime would look like Titus Bramble if he was playing with the shit that makes up our defence. The tossers should be taken up under the Trades Description Act for impersonating professional footballers.
