Yep Rob that’s why I bought him up, could be a no brainier, an upgrade on Lovren and Klavan, has played with VVD and has always been mr consistent.
That being said if Klopp wants someone else, fair enough but my opinion hasn’t changed that upgrades are needed still at cb.
February 21, 2018 at 10:55 am #1602227Yes, can’t wait to see VVD and DV paired at the World Cup … oops, Holland didn’t qualify, did they? I’ve got no idea if they played together in their WC group (given VVDs long-term injury absence they might not have done too often) and can’t recall ever seeing DV play so unsure if he’s an upgrade on what we already have. If someone new is brought in, an upgrade with pace please!
February 21, 2018 at 12:43 pm #1602297Don’t know why folks think De Vrij is slow, he ain’t! Sorry Bob, didn’t see your post earlier on said topic. On a free? Can’t be beat!
February 21, 2018 at 1:05 pm #1602315….and I don’t know why folks think that VVD has tightened up our defence. Our goals conceded per game ratio is (very marginally) worse in games where he has played (1.167) compared to those that he’s not (1.143) over the season. Yes. I’m sure he will be a positive signing long-term, but just object to claims that are not backed up by facts.
February 21, 2018 at 1:55 pm #1602347red… he might not be backed up yet by stats but he is way better than any other defender we have had at the club since Hyypia.
February 21, 2018 at 2:35 pm #1602375Red, hence my VVD post a week or two back. It’s gonna be a game by game thing.
February 21, 2018 at 2:52 pm #1602384Bingo agree he already looks a cut above.
Rob no worries mate, he’s a good player in my opinion but hopefully Klopp addresses in some way.
February 21, 2018 at 4:46 pm #1602433Red herring, I love stats too but I’m not even sure VVD had played even 10 games for us? From what I see when he plays we look better defensively.
I think it’s interesting that stays show we are worse off but maybe we can wait wait more games and come back and explore that stat again at the end of the season. Also, game wise don’t think VVD has had one bad game yet.March 4, 2018 at 4:27 pm #1606858I admit I’ve cut Lovren more times than a Lumberjack. I’m not his biggest fan at all but credit were credit is due he seems to have stepped up since playing with VVD.
I think one key reason for that is because VVD takes care of all the aerial balls which isn’t Lovrens strongest part of his game, Loovren then seems to be able to concentrate on being that covering defender which is probably the strongest part of his game.
I still would like to see an upgrade on Lovren in the Summer, just because he is playing well doesn’t mean we shouldn’t dream bigger than Lovren. I get the impression that VVD also has to manage Lovren and Id rather see a top quality defender next to Lovren that doesn’t need as much babysitting. But I repeat if Lovren can keep playing well then its a win for Liverpool as Lovren will hopefully prove to be a good backup defender if we do upgrade.
March 5, 2018 at 4:58 am #1607042I reckon we’ll get a good idea of Klopp’s thinking on this issue when we see the Man U teamsheet.
March 5, 2018 at 10:31 am #1607169I think we will see Gomez playing more centrally next season and that no central defender will be bought.
March 5, 2018 at 11:17 am #1607209I wouldn’t be surprised by that either Bingo.
March 5, 2018 at 11:42 am #1607231The way I see it is that we are not going to sell Lovren or Matip, the next one out is Klavan and only when he goes will we get a upgrade, if then as Klopp has indicated that Gomez will be played more centrally next season. That leaves us with 4 central defender or 5. There is not much room for another player to come in…
The good news though is that our back four is settling, Robertson has been excellent so far, Clyne is getting back to fitness and we will have Moreno and Arnold competing with them.
Karius has also improved but I reckon Migs will leave and that we will buy goalkeeper. What is it now, 17 games and 9 clean sheets for him.
March 5, 2018 at 11:44 am #1607233Lovren has been playing well alot depends on if he player left or right sided centre back. With VVVD a partnership is forming.
Another thing i noticed is how Salah stays high up the pitch when we don’t have the ball he takes up a spot in-between the LB & CB. So more often then not the LB does not risk going forward which gives our RB & RCB an easier task. Frimino drops in to the middle to form a 4-5-1 with Salah being the one up front but not in the traditional position this is rather clever from Klopp i first noticed it vs Arsenal.
March 5, 2018 at 11:51 am #1607241Lovren has been playing very well since that Spurs debacle.
He moved to right sided centreback and his performances have markedly increased.
He seems to be forming an understanding with VVD which is exactly what we want.
I don’t see Klopp moving him on although a concern is the amount of short term injuries and viruses he picks up.March 10, 2018 at 1:23 pm #1609978Think I’m in a minority by looks of it but wouldn’t be surprised to see us get another cb in.
For me still need a better defensive option in midfield and another cb.
March 11, 2018 at 12:11 am #1610304I’m with you Bob, never been in the Lovrens all right just because he’s played a few good games…I’ve admitted he has played some good games but I’ve ALWAYS maintained that we need an upgrade regardless if his form. One podcaster today remarked that he is too slow, reactive rather than proactive and a bad decision maker when the going gets tough.
March 11, 2018 at 9:59 am #1610353He’s a decent defender Mwake but in my mind just not consistent enough.
I thought Matip would be the player to replace him but he’s not had a great season either but still think he can better so would keep him.
March 11, 2018 at 11:21 am #1610397Any defender would struggle against Lukaku. Lovren had the short straw yesterday & needed some help from his teammates. Lets not be too hard on him for that. Whether he is the long term partner for Virgil, I doubt, but he won’t be up against Lukaku every game & though prone to a clanger is not a bad defender to have in the squad.
March 11, 2018 at 4:30 pm #1610532When you look at teams that have good defences like Chelsea, Tottenham and Man City, would Lovren get into those teams? No.
So if Lovren wouldn’t be good enough for teams like Chelsea, Tottenham and Man City why would he be good enough for us, why is he seemingly first choice for us even?
Most of Lovren’s best periods have come when paired with a superior defensive partner in good form such as Sakho, Matip, VVD…very rarely has Lovren had sustained periods whereby he has been better than his defensive partner.
Also, I find it weird that Klopp is able to man-up and drop Mignolet but persists with Lovren. Mignolet must be wondering why the same level of criticism and minimum standard isn’t applied to Lovren. Whilst Lovren gets a pay rise to 100k, migs has to start looking for a new club!?!? I need someone to explain this lol
