Last night saw Rooney score his 237th goal for Man Utd and moved level with Dennis Law as the clubs second-highest goal scorer of all time. He is now 12 goals short of Sir Bobby Charltons all-time record.

Do you think he will break the record?

Something tells me that he won’t do it.

Rooney will break that record. He is here for the long run. The support for him from his manager, former players, and teammates is immense.

He is on 7 goals this season and if he has a 2 or 3 more games like Brugge it really won’t be that far.

As pants as he’s playing he will still break it in my opinion, it’s only 12 goals and he will probably play at least another 80 games for United.

Law scored scored 237 goals in 404 appearances. Rooney took 496 games. Dennis Viollet bagged 179 goals in 293 games. Its goal average thats important. Or better still goals per minute since an appearance can be as 90 minutes or substitute for 10 minutes.

Both Rooney and Charlton owe their records to coming to the club and into the first team at young age.

hatters – I get the feeling he’ll be moving on this summer mate. Not sure why, but I think they may move him on and bring another big name in to replace him.

@alfie. Fair enough, he might leave at the end of the season – especially considering there is a testimonial already scheduled.

Even so. Rooney has undoubtedly been rubblish this season and yet here he is on 7 goals in early November. He has 27 EPL games, the FA Cup, and the UCL games to score these 12 goals – his form won’t really have to improve. It could be tight but the record will most likely be done and dusted by May.

A lot of our fans do not give Rooney the benefit of the doubt because of his transfer requests but let’s not forget what a splendid talent he is. He was absolutely devastating and people must remember this, and respect it.

He is not a striker, he is not a no 10, he is not a midfielder – he isn’t anything really – just a bulldog that needs to be taken off the leash. One thing is for sure though, Rooney has given us some very special moments of magic through his career with us.

He will not get the credit he deserves as a footballer because of his greed and gluttony off the pitch.

Yep, I agree. Hopefully he’ll get them. He has lost his spark and he needs to find it. Once he has that again he could well go on a scoring run – he obviously has the ability and has done it before.

I’m not fussed about the requests. They were blown out of all proportion and the second one was made up.

I don’t think he has been greedy. He gets paid a lot (a lot less than the papers say imo), but that’s down to his talent and the club. Who would ask for less money in his position, not me for sure. I don’t begrudge him his salary and I can’t understand those that do.

Fergie said he got twice as much as he was earning and then the club decided to pay Fergie the same. We all know Fergie wasn’t earning £250-£300k a week, therefore we should all be able to work out Rooney isn’t either.

I think the club has a wage structure and I wouldn’t be surprised to see 2 or 3 others on the same money. De Gea is certainly, and he doesn’t get any stick despite clearly wanting out. He is a world class goalie though and clearly much more beneficial to the team. But as you say, on his day Rooney was devastating too.

Many feel let down that Rooney didn’t turn out to be the player Ronaldo did. He’s never been in serious contention for international player of the year. Yes he has been a great player for us but not having a defined rolen makes it harder to appreciate him. He’s not the prolific striker RvN was. He’s not the creative midfielder Scholes was or the dynamo Keane was.

Regarding wages, SAF was slightly offbase. A historic reason players got more than the manager is players career is short whereas managers can and do go on till ripe old age. Rooney and all players wages will include commercial rights according to marketability. I doubt SAF sold more products than Rooney so when you add the rights onto basic wage Rooney would be paid more.

I wonder if for some fans Rooney Evrton background is a factor. Keane Rio were involved in “pay me more or I go” disputes but fans forgave them. Rooney reason was at least not money.

@alfie07 – You are wrong with your assessment of Rooney’s wage’s mate, the figure you quote above is precisely the correct ‘ballpark’ figure that Rooney is on because it is widely acknowledged that he is the highest paid player in the EPL and one of the top half dozen or so in the world. Not only that,RVP,Di Maria and Falcao weren’t on that much less than Rooney before they left and Schweinsteiger isn’t that far behind him now either.Even people like Ashley Young are on over 100K per week so it isn’t really that hard to conclude that Rooney will be ‘earning’ far in excess of him. These ridiculous wages that he is on will make it really difficult to get him out of the door at the end of the season if the club wish to do so.They will have to pay him at least 50% of his contract and give him a ‘free’ transfer so he can go and negotiate a big deal to play in the MLS or wherever there is the demand for a big name, busted flush footballer elsewhere in the world.

If rooney was dropped and substituted on a regular basis he will start to look at MLS contracts himself. The thing with Rooney is that he is untouchable at the moment. lvg reckons rooney has credit in the bank, not sure how long this will last, could be until he is sacked. Only a new manager could make rooney leave

Not to spoil the fun of the negative folks, but I’m extremely amazed to see comments like this. Wayne has performed, multiple times in many roles. I’ve never seen a footballer that much versatile. He has played multiple times out of position for his teams, just to make sure they win. If he would’ve been in Spain or Italy, it would’ve been a different story all together. Raul at Real Madrid has a very similar club goal scoring record as Rooney, a very similar club trophy cabinet as Rooney, an identical International trophy cabinet (both have nothing) and a worse International goal scoring record than Rooney. Real Madrid fans adore treat Raul as a hero and legend of the club. Meanwhile some of you find any reason to jump and attack Rooney. He scored 237 GOALS and I’m confident he will surpass Charlton’s record at the end of this season. Rooney deserve to be treated with respect.

Rooney’s obviously coming towards the end, and it doesn’t take a genius to know that Rooney in 2004 was a much better player than Rooney in 2015. Just LVG’s style of play is also not helping, as our club legend Scholes said, even Aguero would struggle to score in this Man Utd team! Still, Rooney will score 12 more goals and surpass Charlton’s record at the end of this season – here I’ve said it.

It’s sad to see people not recognising what Rooney has done for Utd. Embarrassed to be a Utd fan.

We do recognise what Rooney did for us but a person shouldn’t overstay his welcome. I liked Rooney in the team but the 2015 Rooney should also recognise he is not the player he was and move on when he beats Charlton’s record. Would he like to be remembered as the guy we rated or the guy who was on a shed load of money, played rubbish and didn’t leave because he would need to take a pay cut.
