The rumours of players we’re interested in are getting silly. The latest is Shane Long! I know he works his socks off and can be a nuisance to defenders but he’s 29 and can’t get into Soton’s team. We’re also rumoured to be after Riyad Boudebouz (a mixture of Mozza and Mahrez) which would be great except that he’s out with a knee injury! ManUre want more than £20m for Schneiderlin who IMO isn’t worth half that. Gary Monk says Taylor is going nowhere. We’re also connected with Afobe the ex-dingle plus Fernandez from Soton. Last week TP said he only wanted players who were first team regulars so that rules out all but Taylor! Our chairman has hinted that there will be limited funds this time and SB will have to be sold if we want more! What’s the betting we either get nowt or someone who is no better than our bench warmers.

Hopefully, Uncle, TP will have learnt from past mistakes. The one thing that has been established is that his philosophy (love it or hate it) has been bought into by the players and results speak for themselves. Its now clear that he’s in charge and the SB treatment sets a precedent for the whole league. So, observing that Slimani’s expensive move to Leicester has not made them a better team, I hope that any acquisitions that are made are are ones that compliment the existing squad.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I would still look at Lodeiro (Uruguyian) of the Seattle Sounders. A 27-y-old Yacob type of player who reads the game well, but has more speed and much more attacking flair. Mark my word…there will be good players coming to the Premiership from MLS over the next few years.

Cousin-brother, I watch MLS highlights on Sky so know about various players and as you say there are some interesting ones. Whether they could fit into the Prem is a completely different matter though as the MLS is probably no better than our Championship.

Its good that you’re back contributing to this site, Uncle, as it would be pretty dull without you!…Ciaran notwithstanding.

MLS is getting better, not because of the infusion of over-the-hill Lampards, Drogbas and Pirlos, but because of young north American and particularly undiscovered central and South American players. Michael Bradley, for example, is TFC’s best player. And, prior to coming to Toronto, he held his own at Roma in Serie A. So I believe he could compete in the Premier League.

What I like about Lodeiro is his creativity: something you cannot coach. And, because he’s been under the radar so far, he is still hungry. He joined Seattle halfway through last season and just bossed their centre field, taking over games. He’s smallish, tough, feisty and altogether just the sort of player who could ignite our midfield.

Meanwhile, because we now have no relegation fears, I hope that TP has a real go at the F.A. Cup, as this is a year when circumstances and our squad combine to give us a real chance.
