History repeating itself but pundit dismisses Man Utd loan exit rumours

Jesse Lingard Man Utd

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara is adamant that Manchester United will not let Jesse Lingard repeat last season’s winter loan and join West Ham United in January.

Lingard, 28, enjoyed a sensational temporary spell with the Hammers last term. Having struggled for game time at Old Trafford, the England man reunited with former Red Devils chief David Moyes at the London Stadium.

And it was a move that worked wonders for both parties. Having played zero minutes for United in the Premier League, Lingard was handed 16 starts with the Londoners.

He responded by scoring nine goals and assisting another four in a scintillating spell for the East End outfit. It was not enough to earn him a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2020.

Many pundits felt he was unlucky to miss out. And the rumour mill went into overdrive that the Warrington-born forward would move to West Ham on a permanent basis.

However, he remained at the Theatre of Dreams in the hope of reigniting his United career with increased game time.

But the arrival of Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo appeared to sound the death knell for his chances. Lingard has played just 63 minutes of league football from five substitute appearances in 2021-2022.

He has scored twice but now seems on the peripheries once again. Inevitably, thoughts have turned to the new year and what might happen.

Lingard is linked with a move back to West Ham, but Newcastle are also reportedly interested too.

Reports on Sunday suggested he will be able to leave United for as little as £10m.

There is always the possibility of another loan. But O’Hara has dismissed the notion that he will be allowed to tread the same path once again.

“As if Man United are going to allow Jesse Lingard to go to West Ham – they are above them in the table. That’s not going to happen, that’s competition,” he told talkSPORT [via Read West Ham].

“There is no way they are going to allow a top player, who was brilliant for West Ham when he went there.

“They aren’t going to allow him to go on loan there this season when they are in direct competition. That’s never going to happen.”

Lingard among many disgruntled Man Utd stars

A report on Monday claims as many as eight United stars are unhappy with their situation. It is said they were promised action by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

ESPN report that the Norwegian admitted he had overplayed some of his players last season. And the plan was to even out the workload and, in doing so, placate his fringe stars.

But it has not happened and many squad players are trying to plan an exit strategy. Whether Lingard is among them only time will tell.

But, with West Ham flying in third spot, they may be tempted to try and buy him outright. His value has decreased from the summer and the Irons faithful would welcome him with both arms.
