Arsenal spying remarkable Grimaldo deal in move that could accelerate major Man Utd signing

Arsenal are plotting a move for Alex Grimaldo who’s available for an eye-catching sum, and that move could be the final push that helps Man Utd make a signing of their own, per a report.
The Gunners are known to be hunting a left-sided defender this summer. Ajax’s Lisandro Martinez emerged on their radar with the centre-back the subject of plans to convert him into a left-back, according to the Athletic.
At 5 ft 9 in tall, that might not be the worst idea. However, the Argentine has another suitor in the form of Manchester United.
Martinez is reportedly dead set on moving to the Premier League this summer. Reports have indicated he’d be on board with a move to either the Emirates or Old Trafford, though the Erik ten Hag connection could swing in Man Utd’s favour.
However, according to the Mirror, Arsenal are now formulating plans to sign Alex Grimaldo instead.
The Spaniard, 26, plies his trade for Benfica and has developed into one of the Portuguese league’s finest assets.
Indeed, Grimaldo has bagged 14 goals and 40 assists from 143 top flight appearances in Portugal. In his most recent season he provided 10 goal contributions in just 28 outings.
The Mirror (citing Portuguese newspaper Record) state Arsenal are ‘plotting a move’ for the left-back with Mikel Arteta keen to add cover for Kieran Tierney. The Scotland international always impresses when fit, though trips to the treatment table are all too common.
Bargain Alex Grimaldo fee emerges
Several other English sides are reportedly exploring a deal that could cost as little as £6m.
A deal for such a small fee would represent truly exceptional value and is only possible due to Grimaldo’s contract status.
His current deal with Benfica expires in 2023 and they could sell this summer to avoid losing him for free in 12 months’ time.
Arteta has reportedly been in direct contact with Grimaldo’s representatives over a switch. If the left-back were to sign, the Gunners’ interest in Lisandro Martinez would likely subside.
Arsenal deal could aid Man Utd
That would be welcome news at Old Trafford where they still see Martinez as a centre-half.
Ten Hag managed the defender at Ajax and knows exactly how to get the best out of him.
Ajax are reportedly holding out for £43m, with United’s last bid reportedly worth £39m including add-ons.
Should Arsenal drop out of the race upon signing Grimaldo, Man Utd will have a free pass at Martinez.
