Arsenal have four potential captain candidates, claims most experienced player

Arsenal stars Ben White, Gabriel Magalhaes and Alexandre Lacazette

New Arsenal captain Alexandre Lacazette has named four potential future candidates that the club have on their books.

Lacazette has been handed the armband on a permanent basis having filled in for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who’s now a Barcelona player, in recent weeks. In truth, the Gunners‘ youthful recruitment method has left them with a lack of options.

Their French striker, along with defender Cedric, is one of just two players they have aged 30 or over.

With an average age of 24.5 years old, as per transfermarkt, it is a largely inexperienced squad. And Lacazette will no longer be skipper when he leaves at the end of his contract in the summer.

Arsenal will then have to think again on who will be their leader. And they’ve been offered advice by their most experienced player.

Lacazette told the club’s official website: “There is some future captains. Gabriel, big Gabi, has got presence, leadership at the back.

“I think when he’s going to be more fluent with English, it will help a lot.

“Ben White as well, he’s more quiet maybe, but by the way he plays he can be a good leader and maybe with edge can build up.

“[Albert] Sambi Lokonga, but he’s already been a captain in the past so it’s not hard to say he can be a good captain.

“Kieran [Tierney] as well because I think he’s been a captain as well in the past for the national team a few times. You can see some future captains, or leaders.”

Arsenal will be hoping they choose more wisely than they have done in the past. Their captaincy record in recent years makes for grim viewing.

Just their last two skippers, Aubameyang and Granit Xhaka, have both been stripped of the armband due to disciplinary problems.

Elneny’s Arsenal position explained

Mohamed Elneny playing for Arsenal

Meanwhile, the agent of Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny has explained why his client did not join one of three Premier League clubs in January.

Elneny has fallen down the pecking order recently. He has little chance of usurping Thomas Partey, Xhaka or Sambi Lokonga in Mikel Arteta’s plans.

As such, a January exit was on the cards for the 29-year-old. Clubs from Turkey and Saudi Arabia were reportedly in the mix to sign him, as well as English sides.

A report has now given an insight into Elneny’s winter transfer opportunities, as has his agent, Alan Nazmy…
