Arsenal have joined fellow London club West Ham United in being linked with a summer swoop for Lille midfielder Amadou Onana.
The duo finished fifth and seventh respectively in 2021-2022 and both will play European football next term. The Gunners just missed out on a place in the Champions League and will have to make do with the Europa League. And, having reached the semi-finals of Europe’s second-tier competition last season, the Hammers will operate in the Europa Conference League.
The capital clubs are both tipped to strengthen this summer, with Arsenal chief Mikel Arteta having plenty of work to do.
A number of stars are expected to leave the Emirates and the Spaniard is thought to be in the market for a new midfielder. And it seems as though the Belgium Under-21 enforcer is on the radar. But West Ham boss David Moyes is also said to be keen.
Foot Mercato are suggesting that the two clubs ‘have supervised him’ during the campaign just finished. The Senegal-born starlet moved from Bundesliga outfit Hamburg to Lille last summer.
Les Dogues paid the Germans just €7m for the schemer as they looked to bolster the ranks following their Ligue 1 triumph.
He made 32 appearances but only 11 starts in a campaign that failed to get going for the defending champions. Lille finished 10th and failed to qualify for Europe.
And that is cited as the reason why Onana ‘could leave’ before the start of next season. Lille will not receive any money from European football and may need to jettison some players.
Onana offers on the way
Onana would have expected to be with Lille for a number of years. He penned a five-year deal in 2021 and joined a club who had just claimed the title.
Links to Liverpool emerged in March this year while West Ham had also been mentioned in connection with the player. And, according to the report, he now has a ‘a chance of leaving’ after receiving an ‘exit pass’ from the club.
Foot Mercato add that there has been no ‘concrete offer’ from either the Hammers or Gunners. But they are ‘monitoring’ him, with Monaco also said to hold an interest in the giant midfielder.
He stands at 6 ft 6 in and is not afraid to put himself about. Onana would seem a decent addition to both clubs and, aged 20, has his best years still ahead of him.
