Arsenal have made an approach for a Barcelona star according to reports as Mikel Arteta eyes an ambitious move for a new winger.

The Gunners have had a successful transfer window so far with the additions of Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and David Raya.

Several stars could still depart this summer as the likes of Kieran Tierney and Folarin Balogun are among the players being linked with a move away.

With this being the case, Arteta will still have his eye on an extra addition or two and they have been handed a boost in pursuit of a long-term target.

According to The Mirror, Arsenal have made an ‘approach’ for Barcelona winger Ansu Fati as the Spanish youngster is looking to leave the club this summer.

Given Fati has fallen down the pecking order under Xavi, he is now looking for a new club and Arsenal have already ‘opened dialogue’ with Jorge Mendes regarding the star.

Along with Arsenal, plenty of other sides hold an interest in the 20-year-old. Manchester United and Tottenham are also said to be interested for example.

Arsenal aren’t exactly short of options out wide as Arteta has the likes of Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard to rely upon, but Fati would be a welcomed addition.

With Arsenal being back in the Champions League this season, squad depth will be more important than ever for Arteta’s side.

Fati would be an excellent signing

When Fati first burst onto the scene in 2019, he was one of the most exciting prospects in Europe. A series of injuries then halted his progress and he hasn’t quite recaptured that spark since.

Last season for Barcelona the winger only started in 12 La Liga matches as the vast majority of his appearances came from the bench.

In his limited game time, he still managed to produce an impressive seven goals and three assists which isn’t bad going.

Arteta has an excellent track record when it comes to developing youngsters and Fati could benefit from the Arsenal manager.

Xavi gave an open-ended answer when asked about Fati and the winger’s future earlier in the month.

“I don’t understand when you say I’m not very convincing [on the matter]. Until the window shuts [anything can happen],” he told reporters.

“I’m happy with him, he is heritage of this club. I don’t know how I should say it. The market will dictate, and that is up until August 31st.

“I can’t say he will stay because perhaps he won’t. But I’m happy with him: he is a player for the present and the future.”

The 20-year-old is under contract until 2027, with the club holding the option to extend his deal by a further two years.

Time will tell if Arsenal decide to submit an acceptable bid for the Spanish winger, but for the time being they do remain interested.
