Arteta magic derails Newcastle transfer, as Arsenal secure another high quality option

Mikel Arteta has prompted an Arsenal star to perform a U-turn regarding an exit, with Newcastle now likely to miss out on what would have been a stellar coup.
The Gunners have splashed the cash this summer as they attempt to double down on the giant strides forward they made last season.
Jurrien Timber has shored up the backline, while Kai Havertz adds a new dimension further forward and Declan Rice will be a guaranteed starter in the engine room.
The incomings might not end there, with Arsenal understood to be mulling whether to bid for Brentford’s David Raya. If the Spaniard were to arrive, current No 2, Matt Turner, could join Nottingham Forest on a permanent basis.
Elsewhere, Thomas Partey now looks unlikely to leave despite interest from Juventus and clubs in Saudi Arabia.
Another player Arteta would prefer to keep is left-back Kieran Tierney despite interest from Newcastle.
Indeed, in quotes carried by Football London, Arteta recently stressed Tierney is part of his plans moving forward despite Oleksandr Zinchenko being the undisputed first choice at left-back.
When asked if Tierney is in his thinking, Arteta said on July 25: “He is. He is obviously in our plans.
“He came on and did really good in pre-season, not for the first, and this is what we want.
“To increase the level of competition in the team and raise the level of each individual. That is going to be a huge benefit for the team to get to another level.”
Arteta sparks Tierney reversal
The chance to join another Champions League side in Newcastle obviously has an appeal, especially as Tierney would play regularly at St. James’ Park.
However, according to Jacobs, Arteta spoke with Tierney and the full-back has been convinced to stick it out in north London and fight for his place.
The reporter said on Twitter: “I think Kieran Tierney is another really interesting one because from Arteta’s point of view I’m told that he would like to keep the player and sees him as really valuable.
“But from Tierney’s point of view, he hasn’t really had the game-time based on last season that he’s expected from the football club.
“Tierney and Arteta spoke, and I actually think that Tierney is prepared to kind of stay and fight and battle for his place.”
Jacobs concluded by noting Newcastle’s interest won’t subside. However, with Arteta working his magic once again, Tierney doesn’t sound like he’ll be going anywhere this summer.
With a first return to the UCL since the 2016/27 campaign on the horizon, the Gunners need top notch strength in depth all across the pitch.
With Timber signed and Tierney set to stay, Arteta need not worry about his backline any longer.
