Arsenal doctors are reportedly confident that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be fine despite worrying reports on his health at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Gunners hitman recently flew out to Cameroon to join his Gabon team-mates for the prestigious event. But he was forced to miss his side’s opening match of the tournament against Comoros after testing positive for Covid at the airport. The 32-year-old served his isolation period before re-joining the Panthers squad ahead of Friday’s clash with Ghana.

He was then diagnosed with “cardiac lesions” following an examination by Confederation of African Football (CAF) medical officials. The Gabonese FA revealed his condition in a statement posted on Twitter.

Concerns were immediately raised over the former Borussia Dortmund man’s long-term health. But The Athletic are reporting that Arsenal’s doctors are thought to have spoken to Gabon’s medical team about the situation.

And the north Londoners’ medical team have been told that the forward is not in any danger and feeling quite well. There is still confusion surrounding the issue as two of his Gabon team-mates have also been diagnosed with the condition.

Forward Axel Meye and former Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina, now of Nice, were both given the same diagnosis. The trio missed the 1-1 draw with Ghana.

Former Swansea and West Ham striker Andre Ayew gave the Black Stars an 18th-minute lead. But Clermont midfielder Jim Allevinah earned Gabon a point with a strike two minutes from time.

The result was overshadowed by the news on Aubameyang and his collegues. However, it appears as though the controversial forward could be fit for Gabon’s final group game against Morocco.

That takes place next Tuesday in Yaounde, where a point will be enough to qualify for the knockout stage.

New twist in Aubameyang soap

It has been a tough period for Aubameyang after being frozen out at Arsenal. A disciplinary breach saw Gunners chief Mikel Arteta drop him from the squad and strip him of the captaincy.

The rumour mill went into overdrive, with many reports that the player would leave in January. Struggling Newcastle United were linked but opted to sign Burnley’s Chris Wood instead.

Chelsea were also keen on the ex- Saint-Etienne star. However, Arsenal would prefer to offload him to a foreign club, with Juventus keen on a loan deal.

The AFCON was supposed to provide a welcome distraction to events in north London and put him in the shop window. Friday’s news means it is likely he will now remain at the Emirates until the end of the campaign.
