Arsenal remain interested in Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo and “could try again in the summer” to sign him, according to one source in Italy.
Mikel Arteta made attempts to sign the player on loan in January, but the Brazilian stated put. The Gunners were understood to have reached advanced talks with Juventus regarding Arthur, per RMC.
They had previously been linked with the player and were linked with a move for the player after he changed agents.
According to journalist Tuttomercatweb’s Niccolo Ceccarini the 25-year-old is “expected” to leave Turin, possibly this summer.
Arthur, who underwent surgery last summer to his right leg, was not included in Juve’s Champions League group stage squad list. He worked his way back to fitness though and looked ripe for a January loan.
However, he stayed and has been a key part of Max Allegri’s first team in recent months. He has made 27 appearances this season, including six Serie A starts in 2022.
Despite being in the plans of Allegri though, Ceccarini states that is only a short-term thing. And the source insists Arthur will depart Turin in the summer as there will be some “disposals”.
What’s more Arteta and Edu are “still interested”. And Arsenal could make another attempt to land the player in the next window.
Arthur to replace Xhaka?
The Gunners did not invest in their squad in the January window. And that decision has worked out ok for Arteta. They are in control of their own fate regarding the top four. They are level on points with Spurs with a game in hand in the Premier League.
Arteta had been able to shake up his squad last summer with a number of arrivals including Martin Odegaard and Albert Sambi Lokonga, but the latter has struggled to feature.
In fact the 22-year-old has only made one Premier League start in 2022. Therefore it was no surprise that Arteta was looking for an midfield anchor in January.
Mohamed Elneny will leave on a free transfer and the future of Granit Xhaka is far from clearcut. Roma have been linked with the Swiss star once again after they failed to land him after Euro 2020.
Newcastle have also been linked with Arthur, but Italian outlet Calciomercato, have also stated Arsenal will make another move for him once the transfer window reopens.
