Arsenal still have a vibrant interest in signing Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo, but a report has revealed he could re-join a former club instead.
Arthur was a target for Arsenal during the January transfer window. However, they have had to wait to strengthen their midfield until this summer. Attacking midfielder Fabio Vieira has joined, but there could be an arrival elsewhere in the middle of the park.
For example, there have been links with Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans. However, another name that remains on Arsenal’s radar is that of Arthur.
According to Tuttomercatoweb, the Brazilian will be allowed to leave Juventus this summer. With that in mind, the report reiterates that Arsenal’s interest in him is always alive.
However, TMW have now added that Barcelona are interested in taking Arthur back as a replacement for Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong.
Juventus originally signed Arthur from Barcelona in a part-exchange deal involving Miralem Pjanic in 2020. Neither player has particularly flourished since they swapped places.
Therefore, they both face uncertain futures. Arsenal have been hoping Arthur’s predicament may lead him to the Emirates Stadium, but a Camp Nou return could be interesting.
Although there are no official negotiations yet, it is claimed that Arthur still holds Barcelona in high esteem as a club. What’s more, he admires the work of Xavi as their coach, after previously rating him as a player.
One obstacle for Barcelona may be the formula of the operation. It would be difficult for them to pursue anything beyond a loan deal. In contrast, Juventus may prefer a sale, even though Arthur is under contract until 2025.
He only started 11 of their Serie A matches last season. Therefore, they are willing to move him on.
Arsenal could give Arthur Melo fresh start
Arthur has also been linked with Roma, potentially as part of another multi-player swap deal. However, he is not sure about them as a destination.
Roma cannot offer him Champions League involvement at this stage, nor can Arsenal. By staying at Juventus or returning to Barcelona, he could continue at Europe’s top level.

That said, the chances of him getting gametime for Juventus or being able to sign for Barcelona are questionable. Therefore, he may have to keep the likes of Arsenal in mind.
Joining them would give him a first taste of Premier League football. What’s more, he would still get to compete in the Europa League.
They must be aware of any competition to sign him though. But if they can take him, it may be the fresh start he needs.
