Arsenal will soon have to make a final decision on whether they want to sign Arthur Melo after a new club came in for the central midfielder.
Arsenal were hoping to land Arthur in January to bolster Mikel Arteta’s midfield ranks. The Gunners began talks with Juventus and even held discussions with the player’s agent, Federico Pastorello.
Arthur would have gone to the Emirates on loan. However, Arsenal never got the move over the line and due to this he remains a Juventus player.
Transfer links with Arsenal have rumbled on in recent months, with reports stating technical director Edu will lodge an offer.
On Monday, Italian outlet TuttoJuve claimed negotiations between Edu and Bianconeri chiefs were back on.
Arsenal will have to get their act together if their interest in Arthur remains strong, though. As per Fabrizio Romano, Valencia want to capture the Brazil international.
Romano states Valencia boss Gennaro Gattuso is pushing the club’s hierarchy to organise a loan deal for the former Barcelona man.
Valencia’s finances aren’t that strong, which means they cannot pay all of Arthur’s wages. They want Juve to continue paying the majority of his salary during his temporary switch to the Mestalla Stadium.
Arthur Melo may return to Spain
While some teams wouldn’t even entertain such a proposal, Juve are still in talks with Valencia at the time of writing.
Perhaps they see the loan move as a significant step towards a permanent exit for Arthur. For example, he could impress on loan and this would increase the amount Juve request for a permanent transfer.
Valencia’s pursuit puts Arsenal under pressure. They need to begin negotiations in the next few days if they truly want to end the transfer saga and land Arthur.
However, their interest in the 25-year-old has come into question entirely. Romano pours could water on the rumours by claiming Arsenal have never put a bid on the table for him.
They were looking into the move during January, but nothing has occurred since then.
Perhaps Arteta and Edu feel they have enough players in midfield. Thomas Partey, Granit Xhaka, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Mohamed Elneny are currently in the squad.
Or, more likely, they are pursuing a midfielder with Premier League experience instead. Youri Tielemans would arguably be a better fit at the club than Arthur.
He has won the FA Cup during a successful spell at Leicester and is known to perform against the ‘Big Six’. Plus, his contract runs out next year and this means he is available for a reduced price.
According to Thursday’s Transfer Gossip, Leicester are planning to request an Arsenal man as part of a player-plus-cash deal for Tielemans.
