Barcelona are said to be stepping up their interest in Arsenal midfielder Jorginho as the La Liga outfit plots a cut-price deal for the Italian.

Jorginho only arrived at Arsenal in January, but the speculation surrounding his long-term future has been rife throughout the summer.

Turkish giants Fenerbahce are still being linked with the 31-year-old as they have until September 15 to sign players. However, it seems more than likely that Jorginho will be staying in North London until at least January.

Joao Santos, the agent of Jorginho, has insisted that the midfielder is happy in London and that he won’t be moving on this summer.

“He will stay at Arsenal. He is happy to be in England. Let’s move on,” Joao Santos told TuttoMercatoWeb.

When asked whether any other clubs apart from Fenerbahce had made an approach, Santos added: “Some rumours, for example from Saudi Arabia.

“Someone called me, but nothing concrete. Jorginho is also appreciated in Spain, he’s an important player. He will stay at Arsenal.”

While the Gunners are set to keep hold of Jorginho for the time being, Barcelona have formulated a plan to sign the midfielder in 2024.

According to The Sun, Barcelona are keen on the Italian and could make an approach to the player in January. As his deal in North London expires in 2024, he will be able to sign a pre-contract with the La Liga outfit in January.

The report claims that Xavi is looking to add another midfielder to his squad in the near future who can control the tempo of a match. Given the sort of profile Barcelona are looking for, this could be a good fit for the Italian.

Jorginho could come in handy for Arsenal

While an exit in 2024 seems more than likely for the Arsenal man, Mikel Arteta will still be able to get some use out of him this season.

The midfielder has been used as a substitute on three occasions so far this season and he is yet to start. However, given the news that Thomas Partey could be sidelined for up to six weeks, Jorginho could now get his chance.

Arteta’s preferred midfield trio has consisted of Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard although this combination has perhaps lacked balance at times.

Havertz is yet to find his feet in an Arsenal shirt and Jorginho could come in handy once Arsenal’s schedule becomes more hectic.

Barcelona have made good use of the free agents market in the past and Jorginho seems to be their next target. Indeed this summer they managed to prize Ilkay Gundogan away from Manchester City on a free transfer.

Given Barcelona’s complex financial situation, it’s more than likely that they will be sniffing around the free agents market again in 2024 and Jorginho would tick a lot of boxes for Xavi’s side.
