Cody Gakpo: Leeds Utd ‘always’ interested in Arsenal target, as Fabrizio Romano confirms price tag

Arsenal have made little progress in any pursuit of PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo, whose transfer value has been confirmed by Fabrizio Romano.

Gakpo has been mentioned as a target for Arsenal – as well as Leeds United – this summer. He scored 21 goals and provided 15 assists from 46 appearances in all competitions last season. As such, there has been speculation of a Premier League transfer for the 23-year-old.

However, PSV still have him under contract until 2026 after he signed an extension in January. Therefore, prising him away from the Dutch club – who have a Champions League qualifying tie against Monaco coming up – would not be easy.

Yet it is something either Arsenal or Leeds could try if they feel the need to add to their squads further. For now, though, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed there is little movement regarding Gakpo.

Romano wrote for Caught Offside: “At the moment, despite some speculation involving Arsenal, the situation is quiet around Cody Gakpo.

“He has always been on the list for Leeds United, but not in the first position, just after Luis Sinisterra, who was a priority of the club.

“PSV Eindhoven are hoping to keep him and his price tag has always been around €40-45m. He may be a name to monitor in the coming weeks as a big opportunity for many clubs. But PSV manager Ruud van Nistelrooy hopes to keep him at the club.”

Hence, if Arsenal or Leeds were to tempt PSV into a sale, they would have to put something between £33.7m and £37.9m on the table. It would be a significant investment, but one that could pay off in the long term.

Cody Gakpo may have to wait for transfer

As things stand, it looks unlikely that either will launch a bid for the Netherlands international. But Gakpo will remain a player to keep an eye on in the future if he keeps up his form from the previous season.

Arsenal and Leeds have both signed other players who feature in similar territory to Gakpo anyway. As Romano alluded to, Leeds completed the signing of Sinisterra from Feyenoord. He will presumably be a replacement for Barcelona new boy Raphinha.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have added attacking midfielder Fabio Vieira to their squad from Porto, as well as young winger Marquinhos.

However, it is always important for a club to have several options available to them. It will be of particular significance for Arsenal, who will be back in Europe this term.

Whether Gakpo could join either them or Leeds, or would be targeted by a different suitor for his next move, only time will tell.
