Arsenal, Cody Gakpo transfer signals get stronger as PSV chase thrilling replacement

Arsenal have received a boost over their pursuit of Cody Gakpo, as PSV Eindhoven reportedly chase a convincing replacement for the winger.
The Gunners are sourcing attacking reinforcements amid confirmed and potential changes to their front line. Alexandre Lacazette has officially left to return to Lyon, but Eddie Nketiah is in line for a new contract.
Nevertheless, after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s January exit and amid doubt over Bukayo Saka’s long-term future, Arsenal could do with fresh faces.
They have subsequently been chasing Netherlands international winger Gakpo. The 23-year-old, who scored 21 PSV goals last season, only signed a new contract in January.
But PSV are well aware that they do not have the pulling power to resist transfer interest from elsewhere.
As such, VI now reports that they are chasing Gakpo’s replacement and think Sporting star Joelson Fernandes could do the trick.
The 19-year-old has just finished the first year of a two-year loan with Braga and made 23 appearances last season.
VI adds that Joelson is ’emphatically’ the most desired new signing up top among PSV chiefs to replace Gakpo.
As well as Arsenal, Chelsea are also reportedly keen on Gakpo as they look to change the make-up of their front line.
However, Arsenal have had the longer-term interest and could well seal a deal for the Dutchman.
Gakpo rose through PSV’s youth ranks to become a first-team star. As well as providing 21 goals last term, he set up 15 strikes for team-mates.
He made the bulk of his impact in the Eredivisie, directly contributing to a total of 25 goals.
While PSV accept they cannot keep Gakpo away from Premier League interest, the new terms have nevertheless protected his value.
Gakpo ready for step up
Gakpo has proven himself in the Eredivisie and is also having a major say on the international stage.
He is competing with Tottenham winger Steven Bergwijn for a Netherlands role and he could follow in his compatriot’s footsteps this summer.
