Expert backs Man Utd, Arsenal target to secure ‘top’ transfer – before justification promptly follows

Darwin Nunez and Goncalo Ramos

Darwin Nunez has all the attributes to join a “top European club” amid links with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United, Michael Owen has claimed.

There have been plenty of transfer rumours regarding Darwin Nunez in recent weeks. Arsenal and Man Utd both need a new striker for next season and have reportedly been looking at him.

The Uruguay international got the chance to showcase his abilities in front of a Premier League audience when his Benfica side hosted Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday.

Although Benfica lost 3-1, Nunez scored their goal. Not out of the tie yet, he will be hoping to prove a further point when the sides reconvene at Anfield next Wednesday.

But Nunez had already been earning admiration ahead of kick-off on Tuesday. On BT Sport‘s coverage of the build-up, ex-Premier League striker Michael Owen backed him to earn a big move in the summer.

Owen said: “He’s a great shape for starters. Nowadays, if you’re going to lead the line on your own you’ve got to have a real presence and he’s got that.

“He’s got size, he’s good in the air and he’s quick as well. He’s deceptively quick.

“Only 22 years old. You think of how many decent strikers Uruguay have had in the past, and this lad looks like the next on the conveyor belt.

Benfica striker Darwin Nunez doesn’t want to leave for Newcastle and would prefer a London move to Tottenham or Arsenal

“He will give Liverpool problems, he’s certainly well touted around Europe. He could be the next one to join a top European club; he’s got plenty about him.”

Arsenal and Man Utd linked with Darwin Nunez

Nunez’s goal against Liverpool was his 26th of the season in his 33rd game, and fifth from nine in the Champions League.

Already scoring against opponents of high pedigree, the striker would be backing himself to make a seamless transition to one of Europe’s elite.

Links with Arsenal have derived from the fact that Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are out of contract at the end of the season.

The same goes for Edinson Cavani at Manchester United, where there are also doubts about Cristiano Ronaldo in the long-term. Nunez has reportedly been scouted by representatives of the Red Devils.

Benfica will be holding out for a huge sum if they are to sell the South American this summer. His contract with them runs until 2025.
