Deal ‘agreed’ but Arsenal still have major issue to solve to stave off Chelsea threat for long-term target

Arsenal have reportedly agreed a long-term contract with Mykhaylo Mudryk but have still to strike a deal with Shakhtar Donetsk.
The 21-year-old has become one of the most sought-after players in recent months. His displays at both domestic and interantional level have seen clubs scrambling for his signature. Newcastle United have been linked to the Ukraine interantional.
But it is Arsenal’s interest that has garnered the most column inches. Shakhtar’s CEO Sergei Palkin recently confirmed their interest.
And he rated the chances of a deal being done in the winter window as 50-50.
The major obstacle to any transfer is the selling club’s asking price. Despite his relative inexperience, Mudryk has been valued around the £80m mark.
It is said that the Gunners have offered considerably less than that astronomical figure, with a £57m bid on the table.
And Chelsea have now entered the picture, according to reports on Saturday.
The Guardian suggested that the west Londoners have offered in the region of £85m for the winger.
But Sport Arena are now reporting that the Krasnohrad-ace has agreed a five-year deal at the Emirates.
They also state that, while a transfer fee has not been agreed, Arsenal are set to make an improved offer.
Whether that is enough to appease the Miners’ hierarchy only time will tell. But Gunners fans will be pleased that the player seems keen to join the club.
Mikel Arteta has made no secret of the fact he wants to strengthen this month. And it is just a case of deciding if he wants to blow his expected budget on just one player.
Arsenal determined to seal Mudryk capture
Arsenal have been superb during the first part of the season. They were five points clear of the chasing pack prior to the World Cup break.
And victories over West Ham and Brighton coupled with Manchester City’s draw with Everton have widened their advantage to seven points.
There seems a genuine belief that the capital outfit can maintain their title push and lift the Premier League trophy in May.
City will doubtless have a say in proceedings but Arteta is determined to do all he can to keep his side in front.
And, with that in mind, it is clear why they want a player of Mudryk’s class and potential on board in January.
Arsenal have a number of exciting young players. But snaring the man with eight Ukraine caps could be the difference between success and finishing among the also-rans.
The youngster has already bagged 11 goals in all competitions and assisted a further eight this term. That is from just 19 appearances and he clearly has an eye for goal.
However, Shakhtar’s demands mean it is by no means a certainty that he will end up at the Emirates.
Mudryk has dropped several hints that he would prefer to join Arsenal above other potential suitors.
Personal terms were never going to be an issue and today’s update confirms his willingness to play in red.
But the finances involved mean the saga could run the length of the transfer window.
