Arsenal risk transfer embarrassment as Brighton begin talks over ‘audacious’ Florian Grillitsch signing

Austria midfielder Florian Grillitsch

Brighton could snatch Florian Grillitsch from under the noses of Arsenal after reportedly beginning talks over his move to the Amex Stadium.

Grillitsch is a defensive midfielder who represents the Austria national team and most recently played for Hoffenheim in Germany. He has won 33 caps on the international stage and made 178 appearances in the German top flight.

The player is now set for a new challenge following the expiry of his Hoffenheim contract.

Grillitsch and his agent held talks with Serie A club Fiorentina last month. According to Fabrizio Romano, Fiorentina were leading Leeds in the race to sign him at that point.

However, a transfer to Italy never went through and Grillitsch remains a free agent.

Arsenal admire his ability and would like to take him to the Emirates Stadium. However, they are at risk of losing out to Graham Potter’s Brighton.

According to The Telegraph journalist Mike McGrath, the Seagulls have begun transfer discussions with Grillitsch.

McGrath labels their move ‘audacious’ due to the star being wanted by some big clubs in Europe, including Arsenal.

Brighton join Arsenal in the chase for Florian Grillitsch

The report confirms Arsenal have looked at Grillitsch as a potential addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad. However, Brighton have stolen a march on them by getting talks underway over a move.

It would be embarrassing for Arsenal to lose out on Grillitsch to a club of Brighton’s size. To make matters worse, he is a player Arsenal could do with having in their squad.

Thomas Partey has struggled with injuries since joining the Gunners in October 2020. Granit Xhaka is a hot-head and has disciplinary issues as a result.

These factors mean Arteta often has to use Mohamed Elneny as one of the players in front of a back four. While he is a reliable performer, Arsenal could probably do with an upgrade.

For Brighton, meanwhile, landing Grillitsch would continue their impressive work in the transfer market. The club excels in finding hidden gems.

Marc Cucurella and Leandro Trossard are two good examples, though Cucurella is now a target for Manchester City.

The Seagulls also have 20-year-old midfielder Moises Caicedo in their squad. He is adjusting well to the Premier League and looks set for a bright future.

Getting Grillitsch on a free transfer would fit in with Brighton’s transfer policy and serve to embarrass Arsenal at the same time.

Meanwhile, Friday’s Euro Paper Talk reveals Arsenal have been given the chance to sign an Atletico Madrid attacker.
