Expert pours cold water on Arsenal right back swoop: ‘I’m perhaps not 100% convinced he’s ready for a move like that’

Arsenal have been told that a summer transfer target is not yet ready for a switch to The Emirates, as their interest in a Galatasaray right-back continues to grow.

The Gunners are being heavily tipped to make a move for defender Sacha Boey, who is also of interest to a number of other clubs, but French football expert Jonathan Johnson is urging caution over any transfer.

Writing for CaughtOffside, Johnson provided some insight into Boey’s development since quitting his homeland for Turkey earlier in his career.

Boey is considered an exceptional young, but Johnson thinks swapping the Turkish top flight for the Premier League would be too much of a leap for the 22-year-old – who has been tipped for a £20million switch to north London.

He said: “Sacha Boey is impressing at Galatasaray and is now understood to be on the radar of clubs like Arsenal, while he’s also increasingly admired by the French national team because they have a bit of an issue with depth in the full-back positions.

“Boey has really exploded since leaving France and he’s shown he’s a player who could fill that void on the right-hand side for Les Bleus.

“My understanding is Boey is interesting a number of clubs in the Premier League and it wouldn’t surprise me to see him make a move like that at some point sooner rather than later.

“We’ve seen his attacking qualities from full-back, and he puts in a shift defensively too, so it’s easy to see why that kind of profile is appealing to some top sides.”

Premier League a big step up for Boey

But despite his glowing praise for the young defender, Johnson thinks it will be a tough task to transfer his form straight into the Premier League.

“In terms of Arsenal, I’m perhaps not 100% convinced he’s ready for a move like that just yet, but he has been an unexpected success since leaving France for Turkey – the Premier League is obviously a level up from that, though it’s still not an easy environment to thrive in, but he’s done really well there and he’s definitely being looked at by a number of English clubs, not just Arsenal,” Johnson added in his CaughtOffside column.

The Gunners are on the lookout for another right-back given the amount of time that Ben White had to cover the position last season due to injuries to Takehiro Tomiyasu.

However, it looks like a move for Boey may come a little too early for the player in his development.
