Arsenal lead race for Houssem Aouar as clubs alerted to major Lyon decision

Arsenal are reportedly now frontrunners to complete the signing of Lyon playmaker Houssem Aouar in the summer.

Auoar is out of contract with his boyhood club Lyon at the end of next season. While negotiations for a new deal were ongoing, they have now reached a standstill as Aouar looks to move on. Now, the Ligue 1 outfit have decided to sell their man this summer, in order to get a fee for his services.

RMC report that a number of European clubs have been alerted to this decision, and are all keen on landing the star.

However, Arsenal are reportedly still leading the race, even though they now face stiff competition.

Real Betis, Real Sociedad and Liverpool are also interested in signing Auoar.

The report also adds that an anonymous Italian club who qualified for Champions League football next season are monitoring the situation.

European football may play a decisive factor in Auoar’s next destination. The French international is hoping to make the squad for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.  He  also believes Champions League football is his best chance of achieving this.

He has previously only earned one cap for France back in October 2020.

Arsenal have been linked to the star in the last two transfer windows, however, a deal never managed to materlialize.

Now, the Gunners have their best chance yet, with Lyon admitting they must sell, or risk losing Aouar on a free transfer.

How Houssem Aouar would fit in at Arsenal

From 36 Ligue 1 appearances during the season, Aouar had a total of 10 goal contributions.

He played predominantly as a central midfielder throughout the campaign, while also helping out in defensive and attacking roles.

Aouar may finally get his Arsenal move as £25m bid could be enough

In recent years, Arsenal have struggled to find midfielders that can contribute well to the attack.

Odegaard has improved this department since his arrival. In 36 Premier League games this season he managed 11 goal contributions, with seven of them goals scored himself.

However, the addition of Aouar would still be a huge improvement to the overall squad depth at the Gunners.

The 23-year-old is very experienced for his age, and also still has time to further improve his game.
