Arsenal attacking upgrade ‘beyond comprehension’ for pundit, as Gabriel Jesus continues ‘magnificent’ introduction

Gabriel Jesus celebrating for Arsenal

Gabriel Jesus has upgraded the Arsenal attack thanks to the ‘magnificent’ example he has set in comparison to his predecessors, according to Jamie Redknapp.

Jesus joined Arsenal from Manchester City earlier this summer, but it already feels like he has been at the Emirates Stadium a long time. The Gunners needed to add another striker this summer and they may have found the perfect solution with the Brazilian.

Indeed, Jesus has two goals and three assists to his name from his first three Premier League appearances in an Arsenal shirt. He is already justifying the club’s pursuit of him.

Mikel Arteta has given him more prominence as a centre-forward than his old mentor Pep Guardiola did. In turn, both player and club are benefitting.

After Arsenal’s win over Bournemouth on Saturday, during which Gabriel Jesus had a goal ruled out but was still named player of the match on Sky Sports, pundit Redknapp said it is ‘beyond comprehension’ how the 25-year-old has transformed the club’s frontline.

“The upgrade Jesus has given them is beyond comprehension because of what they’ve had before,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.

“I used to watch Arsenal strikers strolling around, playing tippy-tappy football. Jesus is in and around it, he wants to get hurt, he makes challenges, he’s been fantastic for this club.

“The standards he sets, not just in matches but in training, gives the right example for everybody to follow.

“He’s always been a good player; we admired him at Manchester City, but you never felt he was the number nine. You always felt it was (Sergio) Aguero or whoever it may be, he was a player they turned to if they had injuries or played him off the left or right.

“Here, he is the focal point of the team and he is doing things that are just magnificent.”

Redknapp thinks Arsenal should be optimistic – not only because of Gabriel Jesus

Arsenal have won all three of their Premier League fixtures so far this season. While it has not been the toughest opening few weeks, they have made light work of each opponent.

After just missing out on a return to the Champions League last season, Arsenal will be hoping to keep up their positive start this time around in the long term.

According to Redknapp, they have every chance of achieving something now, thanks to the special group they are building.

“They are full of confidence, there’s a great energy about the team,” Redknapp added. “The new players have really added to what they’re trying to achieve here.

“It’s very early in the season but there are real reasons to be optimistic about this squad. They’ve very, very impressive right now. They look a formidable team, very, very strong.

“They have a resilience about them, real strength, they have options – (Emile) Smith Rowe and (Kieran) Tierney coming off the bench, you start to look at this Arsenal team and think, ‘Why can’t they go on and really achieve something?’

“It’s going to be tough, there’s some real challenges to come but they’ve got some nice fixtures ahead of them. If you’re an Arsenal fan you should be really proud of this side right now.”

Arsenal will aim to make it four wins out of four when they host Premier League newcomers Fulham next Saturday evening.
