Juventus will come sniffing for Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes if Chelsea get a Matthijs de Ligt deal over the line, according to a report.
Centre-back signings have become an expensive commodity in transfer windows in recent seasons. And with top-class defenders in relatively short supply across Europe, one transfer can have a domino effect on other players.
Chelsea are looking to react to losing two of last season’s star defenders in Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.
Sevilla’s Jules Kounde is a long-term target, but Netherlands international De Ligt has recently emerged on the Blues’ radar.
They are willing to pay between €65million (£56million) and €70million (£60million) for the centre-back. What’s more, Chelsea have floated the idea of Christian Pulisic in a players-plus-cash offer, but no avenue of discussions has yet advanced.
Nevertheless, Juventus are advancing their plan for who could succeed De Ligt.
And according to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Turin club will go after Arsenal’s Brazil international Gabriel.
The 24-year-old has formed a rock-solid part of the Gunners’ back line since his September 2020 move from Lille.
Indeed, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has enjoyed watching the partnership between Gabriel and Ben White at the back.
The report subsequently claims that Juve feel ‘convinced’ that Gabriel would be the right man to succeed De Ligt. Bosses at the Serie A club feel the defender is ‘one of their most interesting targets’.
Gabriel has three years left on his Arsenal contract and remains at the heart of Arteta’s Arsenal plan.
The Spanish manager is looking to finally get Arsenal over the line and back into the Champions League, after coming so close last season. He therefore wants as many options at the back as possible.
Chelsea, meanwhile, have big gaps to fill and need centre-backs.
Gabriel part of intriguing Arsenal situation
White and Gabriel could well remain Arteta’s senior pairing at centre-back for next season.
However, Arteta has insisted that he wants to finally make William Saliba a first-team player next term too. The Frenchman has vented his frustration at his lack of Gunners game time, amid loan spells back in his home country.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are looking at Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez as a new signing.
He could yet replace Gabriel if Arsenal cannot resist Juventus’ interest.
For now, though, Arsenal will be watching Chelsea and Juventus’ discussions for De Ligt.
