Arsenal told Gianluca Scamacca is on same level as Dusan Vlahovic, amid Sassuolo admission

Arsenal have been told that striker target Gianluca Scamacca is as good as Dusan Vlahovic, who snubbed a move to the Emirates in January.

Arsenal have been looking at potential new striker signings for several months now. They need to replace Alexandre Lacazette after the Frenchman’s return to Lyon on a free transfer.

Eddie Nketiah appears set to remain with the Gunners by penning a long-term contract. But Mikel Arteta needs a top-class goalscorer to lead his forward line in the big games.

Arsenal were chasing Vlahovic during the winter transfer window. Despite rumours that a deal had been agreed with Fiorentina, the Serbia hitman went on to join Juventus instead.

During a recent interview with The Telegraph, Vlahovic spoke about his decision to reject the Gunners.

“Maybe my agent knows [about Arsenal’s offer] but I never talked to anyone about it,” he said.

“I just had one club in my mind because Juventus is Juventus. There is nothing else to say. And now I feel honoured to be given this jersey. It’s incredible every time I put it on.”

Arsenal have since began pursuing Sassuolo forward Scamacca. He spent time in the youth ranks of Lazio, Roma and PSV before joining Sassuolo in 2017.

Gianluca Scamacca matches Vlahovic

The Italy international was in good form during 2021-22, scoring 16 goals in 36 Serie A appearances. He bagged the same amount of goals as Vlahovic, seven, following the latter’s January switch to Juve.

And Sassuolo chairman Guido Angelozzi has heaped praise on his prized asset, putting him in the same bracket as Vlahovic.

“I took him to Sassuolo when he was just a kid. For me he is a top striker, he is no less than Vlahovic,” the chief told Sky Sport Italia (via TMW).

“He scored 16 goals in a short time; there are no such strikers in Europe.

“He already did it once (left Italy), going to Holland when he was very young, then we were good at Sassuolo in bringing him back to Italy. Who will be better will take him away again.

“Surely it will cost a lot. He will be the future centre-forward of the national team.”

Angelozzi is certainly hyping up his player, potentially as a ploy to get more money for him.

Scamacca is behind Vlahovic when it comes to 2021-22 scoring stats. Vlahovic finished the season on 29 goals, compared with Scamacca’s 16.

But 23-year-old Scamacca is showing he has the attributes to catch up with his attacking counterpart. And a move to Arsenal could help him to excel on a bigger stage.

Meanwhile, striker alternative Victor Osimhen has spoken about his future as Arsenal consider an increased bid for him.
