Arsenal accelerate midfield signing after player greenlight, as Edu nears transfer masterstroke

Gremio midfielder Bitello

Arsenal are in talks over signing a Brazil-based midfielder who is ‘eager’ to move, and if Edu’s track record is anything to go by, another transfer masterstroke is looming.

One of the various reasons why Arsenal were able to challenge Man City for the Premier League title last season was their stellar recruitment over recent years.

The Gunners have rarely missed in the market since Edu began pulling the strings. The Brazilian has also had particularly notable success when signing fellow countrymen.

Indeed, Gabriel Magalhaes, Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus have all been roaring successes in north London. Martinelli is arguably the the pick of the bunch given he cost just £6m when plucked straight from Brazilian side Ituano.

Reports in Italy recently claimed Edu was aiming for something of a repeat after sizing up Gremio midfielder Bitello.

The 23-year-old right-footer primarily plays in central midfield, though can also deputise on the right flank if required.

Bitello has scored 16 goals in 86 appearances for Gremio and per TuttoMercatoWeb, Arsenal were firmly in the mix to secure his signature.

Now, a fresh update from 90min has revealed the names of those competing with Arsenal for the player. However, it’s the Gunners who are being tipped to win the race.

Firstly, 90min report competition is coming from Monaco, FC Porto and Zenit St. Petersburg.

Nonetheless, it’s Arsenal who are actively working on the deal right now and are ‘confident’ of capturing the Brazilian.

Gremio’s asking price is a relatively modest £8.5m. As such, a move would share another similarity with that of Martinelli’s given the similar price tags.

From the player’s perspective, it’s stated Bitello is ‘eager to move continents’. In other words, he’d be on board with leaving South America for Europe by way of joining Arsenal.

Bitello is understood to have been hand-picked as a transfer target by Edu. Given the Arsenal chief’s excellent track record with buying Brazilian players in particular, few would bet against Bitello also being a success if the deal does go through.
