Arsenal accelerate Real Madrid transfer plan by contacting thrilling target they can rescue from ‘danger’

Federico Valverde, Marco Asensio, Real Madrid, November 2022

Arsenal are already in contact with a Real Madrid winger they are “willing to bid” for during the summer, a Spanish report has revealed.

Currently top of the Premier League, Arsenal will be hoping to win the title this season to reinforce that they should be an attractive destination for players. Even if not, they should have Champions League football on offer.

Therefore, they are already giving some thought to what they might do in the summer transfer window. In that regard, one of their more high-profile targets could be Real Madrid winger, Marco Asensio.

The Spain international is due to become a free agent at the end of the season. Of course, Real Madrid could try to extend his contract. But right now, Diario Sport suggests Asensio is “in danger” of leaving.

Arsenal have admired Asensio for a while and are one of the main contenders to sign him. And according to Sport, they are already in contact with the 27-year-old’s representatives.

Since Asensio is into the final six months of his contract with Real Madrid, he is free to negotiate with teams like Arsenal. However, the Premier League leaders have not come forward with anything official yet.

Still, they are “willing to bid” for him in the summer. By that, the report means in terms of making a contract offer to him. Of course, his upcoming status as a free agent will mean there will be no need to pay Real Madrid for his transfer.

Arsenal are not the only contenders to sign Asensio, though. Reigning Serie A champions AC Milan are also in contact with his entourage.

Furthermore, Real Madrid’s arch-rivals Barcelona are asking to stay in the loop of developments regarding Asensio. Indeed, they would gladly welcome him across enemy lines for free, while he is open to the switch.

Some sources would even class Barcelona as the favourites for the former Mallorca man at this stage.

Arsenal aiming to win Asensio transfer battle

However, Arsenal will be hoping their efforts can pay off in their pursuit of Asensio.

They have planted the seeds for success with a young core of players. However, as their ambitions have grown in recent months, they have also been incorporating some players in their prime to help.

Approaching the peak years of his career, Asensio would fit in with that theme. As a left-footed winger who likes to start on the right-hand side, he could help ease the burden on Bukayo Saka.

They could have a similar battle to the one between Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard on the opposite flank, in theory. It would give Mikel Arteta quite the exciting range of attacking options to choose from.

Asensio has scored six goals from 31 appearances for Los Blancos this season. During his overall spell with the club, he has played in 266 games and scored 55 times.

Coincidentally, Asensio is not the only Real Madrid winger being linked with a transfer to Arsenal, since one of his colleagues could follow a similar route
