Arsenal offered chance to sign Barcelona star Clement Lenglet despite Tottenham talks being underway

Barcelona centre-back Clement Lenglet

Arsenal have reportedly been offered the chance to beat Tottenham to the signing of Clement Lenglet despite rumours talks have already begun with Barcelona over a move to their north London rivals.

The Times states the Catalan giants have made the 26-year-old Frenchman available to both Premier League clubs on loan, with Spurs already beginning discussions over the potential deal.

Another report from Sport claims that Daniel Levy is willing to pay Lenglet’s €10million per year salary. That rounds out at £165,000-a-week.

Tottenham also have the edge over the Gunners over a potential transfer after winning the race for Champions League football.

That is almost certain to be a deciding factor, with Mikel Arteta’s men only qualifying for the Europa League.

The left-footed Lenglet also fills a need for Antonio Conte and is capable of playing a back three.

Spurs are believed to have turned to Lenglet after struggling to land top target Alessandro Bastoni.

Inter a tough nut to crack

The Inter Milan defender has been top of Conte’s wanted list. However, the Serie A outfit are reluctant to sell and the player himself prefers to remain in Italy.

Lenglet is still a classy alternative, however, and has already been capped 15 times by France.

If he does arrive he will almost certainly fill Ben Davies’ role in Conte’s defence. While that is harsh on the Welshman, it allows Conte to use him as back up in two positions, including wing-back.

Former Sevilla man Lenglet has made 160 appearances for Barca in all competitions, scoring seven times.

However, he found starts hard to come by last season and The Times adds that he is deemed surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp.
