Ian Wright urges Arsenal to tie down ‘vitally important’ attacker amid exit rumours

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has urged the club to sort out Alexandre Lacazette’s future, with the centre-forward free to leave as things stand.

Lacazette’s terms expire in June, meaning he can sort out a pre-contract agreement with a club on the continent ahead of a free transfer. And his former side Lyon are keen to engineer such a deal.

Their president, Jean-Michel Aulas, was asked about Lacazette in February. The chief replied: “He’s a player who interests us for all that he has represented here.

“We noticed his maturity and he is someone that the club have stayed in contact with.”

Aulas added: “We will make every possible effort [to sign him].”

Lacazette has been integral for Arsenal since the transfer of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Barcelona. 30-year-old Lacazette provides plenty of experience to an otherwise youthful forward line.

The Frenchman impressed during the recent 3-2 victory over Watford, too. Both Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli benefitted from his clever flicks before finding the net.

Ian Wright believes star is ‘vitally important’

Former striker Wright was asked about Lacazette’s situation while appearing on the Wrighty’s House podcast. “It will be interesting to see how they do that,” he said (via

“His position is vitally important to everything we do, just look at the two assists he got. Unless we get that person, you think to yourself, ‘maybe we could give Laca another year or two’.

“I think Laca has got to stay around. You can see with his little back flick [for Saka’s goal], his little assist. He is feeling the vibe.”

Lacazette has not been in deadly form this campaign, registering just five goals in 26 outings. But as Wright pointed out, his influence on the attacking players around him is huge.

The player will be looking to start when Mikel Arteta’s side host Leicester City at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon.
