Kevin Phillips has recommended James Ward-Prowse to Arsenal, as he thinks Mikel Arteta ‘would love’ the midfielder in his squad.

Arteta has inspired Arsenal to one of their best seasons in recent years so far this term. Indeed, the Gunners sit in sixth place, with three games in hand over West Ham and Manchester United above them.

The signings that Arsenal have made of late have helped to elevate them back to fighting for the top four. The likes of Aaron Ramsdale, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Ben White have all been crucial to their top season so far.

Former Premier League striker Phillips has recommended Arsenal a Premier League star he feels would be a perfect fit.

“Ward-Prowse is the sort of player Arsenal need to be looking at in the summer,” he told Football Insider.

“There’s not many better set-piece takers than him in the world.”

Indeed, the 27-year-old has scored the most direct free kicks in Premier League history.

What’s more, Phillips feels Arteta would love having a player like Ward-Prowse.

“He’s the sort of player Arteta would love in his squad I imagine,” he added.

“Could they get him out of Southampton? That’s the question. He just signed a new deal and I think he’s happy there. It would be a big test if Arsenal could knocking though. He could be persuaded to join.”

Ward-Prowse could be part of spending spree

Arsenal are set to spend big in the summer, with Stan Kroenke reportedly set to sanction a number of signings during the window.

A “significant summer outlay” is expected.

That could well see the Gunners sign a number of quality footballers. Ward-Prowse could well be a player the side has on their mind.

The side are also expected to see a host of stars move on from the club, to make room for new talent.
