Arsenal find alternative destination for Lucas Torreira but have to get over one big hurdle

Lucas Torreira of Arsenal, Fiorentina

Arsenal are reported to have offered Lucas Torreira to Lazio in an attempt to move him on but the Serie A club are only interested in a season-long loan move.

The Gunners and Torreira have been left in limbo after his move to Fiorentina fell through. Lazio could be an alternative but another loan move is far from ideal. The midfielder is out of contract in 12 months and could then leave on a free.

This summer represents Arsenal’s last chance to recoup some cash but it is proving difficult. Torreira was a revelation while on loan at Fiorentina last season and a £12million deal looked to be done.

However the move has fallen through following a disagreement over the finances. The player’s agent accused the Italian club of moving the goalposts regards the wages and transfer fee.

The Viola have hit back at such claims. But whatever the truth is, the move looks off the agenda for now. There is a chance it could be resurrected but for now Arsenal are looking at other options.

And according to a report in Corriere dello Sport, Lazio is one of them. They report that coach Maurizio Sarri has a new midfielder high on his wanted list. Torreira would fit the bill perfectly. Indeed the Gunners ace has been on the radar of Lazio for some time.

The publication says Sarri wanted him last season before he joined Fiorentina. And former Lazio boss Simone Inzaghi is also said to have been an admirer.

Following his performances last season, Lazio are even more keen. He caught the eye during his 35 appearances when scoring five goals. He also chipped in with a couple of assists.

However the stumbling block remains. Lazio want it to be a loan. That is no use to Arsenal taking into consideration his contract situation.

The report in Corriere dello Sport says there could be a way to resolve it. Arsenal could first secure Torreira to a new deal, then loan him out again. Otherwise Lazio will have to sign him on a permanent basis right now.

Arsenal need to find a solution

Arsenal will be keen to find a resolution as soon as possible. Torreira staying and playing a role under Mikel Arteta at the Emirates is not an option it would appear.

The Gunners boss does want new midfielders but Torreira is not in his plans. He would prefer the £12million to put towards his transfer targets.

Torreira has failed to live up to expectations and the style of Serie A clearly suits him more. So it will be best for all parties if a permanent deal can be hammered out.
