Fiorentina president aims sharp dig at Arsenal, Lucas Torreira agent after midfielder’s transfer falls through

Lucas Torreira of Arsenal, Fiorentina

Fiorentina president Rocco Commisso has warned Arsenal, as well as the agent of Lucas Torreira, that he will get ‘tougher’ and ‘angry’ after being accused of moving the transfer goalposts.

Torreira spent the most recent season on loan at Fiorentina from Arsenal. He made 35 appearances for the Italian club, registering five goals and two assists.

The central midfielder was expected to make the transfer a permanent one. After all, Mikel Arteta doesn’t really have any need for him in north London.

But the transfer collapsed recently, with Torreira’s agent claiming Fiorentina didn’t want to pay the agreed wages or transfer fee.

The representative, Oscar Bentancourt, said: “When we agreed on the €1.5 million loan with Arsenal last summer, I got from the English club that Fiorentina would not pay that money if Lucas played at least 25 games.

“With this, we set the option-to-buy at €15 million, payable in 6 instalments of €2.5m by 2025.

“We had agreed on a (player) contract with Fiorentina for the coming seasons of €2.7 million net a year. Fiorentina, however, now wanted to lower both his salary and the cost of the transfer.

“We couldn’t accept, and Arsenal didn’t accept either. Now Lucas has a contract with the Gunners until June 30, 2023.”

Fiorentina official hits back at Lucas Torreira agent

However, Commisso has now come back with a warning to Arsenal and Bentancourt. The Fiorentina chief said (via Metro): “I am very disappointed with what happened in the 24 hours after qualifying for the Europa Conference League.

“Unfortunately, as happened with [Gennaro] Gattuso, some fans fell for it with the petition with Torreira. Agents released this news.

“The agents, as I did with Gattuso and [Dusan] Vlahovic, will not win with me. I’ll be tougher and get angry.

“I don’t want to talk about the market because I’m not here to talk about it. There are insiders who will think about this.

“There may be the possibility of revisiting the situation with Torreira in the coming weeks, but I don’t want to give any hint of optimism or pessimism without foundation.”

Commisso’s final line suggests Fiorentina could re-open negotiations for the Uruguay international. But they aren’t the richest of clubs and won’t want to pay over the top for him.

The president’s comments could also cause problems for Arsenal in the future. They may struggle to land any players from Fiorentina after angering Commisso so much.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have begun talks with another player’s agent over a transfer from Napoli.
