Former Arsenal keeper Mat Ryan has revealed that one of the Gunners’ star players is willing to leave for Spain.

The Australia international joined Mikel Arteta’s side in January. He was signed on loan from Brighton as backup for Bernd Leno.

Ryan went on to make just three appearances for Arsenal before his temporary spell came to an end.

There were rumours of the deal being made permanent for £5million which ultimately failed to materialise.

Ryan did achieve a permanent transfer in the summer as Real Sociedad snapped him up for an undisclosed fee.

The shot-stopper has now been speaking about his time in Spain and how he came to join Sociedad.

He revealed that Arsenal playmaker Martin Odegaard convinced him on the transfer. The attacking midfielder spent the 2019-20 campaign on loan at Sociedad from Real Madrid.

Ryan went on to state that Odegaard could return to La Liga in the future.

In an interview with Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Ryan was asked if he speaks with the Norwegian.

He said: “Yes, frequently. Before I knew Real were interested in me, he told me that Real, because of his experience here, was a great team, a 10 out of 10 in everything: the team, the life here, the public…everything.

“And now I agree with him. He’s comfortable at Arsenal, but he’s open to coming back one day, for sure.”

Odegaard joined Arsenal on an initial loan during the same transfer window as Ryan. His move would then be made permanent for £34m in the summer.

The promising 22-year-old has registered a goal and an assist so far this campaign. He bagged a free-kick as Arsenal beat Burnley 1-0 on September 18.

Odegaard also set up a goal during the 6-0 thrashing of West Brom in the Carabao Cup.

Wilshere delivers verdict on Arsenal midfielder

Former Arsenal star Jack Wilshere believes Arteta will miss Granit Xhaka if the Switzerland international opts to move on.

Xhaka was heavily linked with Roma earlier this year. Jose Mourinho is thought to be a huge admirer of his hard-working nature.

A move failed to go through and the central midfielder remained at Emirates Stadium.

When asked about Xhaka, Wilshere said: “Granit is someone I played with in my last few years at the club.

“He was always a good team-mate, a good team player. He obviously has his difficulties with the fans but that is just the type of character he is.

“The last game against Brighton, I think Arsenal really missed him. They missed his quality to put the foot on the ball and start attacks.

“He is the best player in the current squad at doing that so they need to work out a way to play without him there.

“He is injured and they are going to be without him for a few months – I think they will definitely miss him.”
