Mikel Arteta disciple could ditch Arsenal for massive European move after having head turned

William Saliba, Martin Odegaard, Arsenal, November 2022

Arsenal defender William Saliba might soon be on the move, as reports suggest he ‘would be very interested’ in Paris Saint Germain’s project.

Despite signing for Arsenal in the summer of 2019, Saliba’s first senior appearance for the Gunners came this season. Indeed, he was sent out on three loan spells after joining from St Etienne.

Firstly, he returned to the Ligue 1 side, before also undergoing spells with fellow French sides OGC Nice and Marseille.

That he played for them in that order showed that the centre-back was progressing. Indeed, Marseille outperformed both the other sides the two seasons prior to Saliba joining.

They did so again with him in the side, finishing second in the league. Saliba was also part of a defence that kept 13 league clean sheets over the course of the season.

Clearly, he had an impact, and had progressed well since being signed by Arsenal in 2019.

As such, Mikel Arteta integrated him into his side in the summer, and he has never looked back.

The Frenchman has played every single one of Arsenal’s league games this season. During that time, he has scored twice, and has also helped to keep seven clean sheets – the most of any side so far.

Saliba could be tempted by PSG

It is clear that the centre-back is now central to Arteta’s plans. Former Gunner Emmanuel Petit thinks his current form is “revenge” in showing everyone at the club what he can do after spending three seasons out on loan.

While he appears to be thriving at the Emirates, Saliba could have his eye on a move elsewhere.

According to a report from CBS Sport (via Daily Post) PSG have registered an interest in him. They are apparently monitoring his contract, which runs out in the summer of 2024.

While reports have suggested talks are ongoing between him and the club, there has been nothing to suggest he will sign a new deal yet.

As such, PSG could swoop, and things could be made easy for them. Indeed, the report claims that Saliba ‘would be very interested in the Parisian project’.

Whether or not that is the case remains to be seen.

However, Saliba is clearly well accustomed to playing in France, given it’s his native country and he has spent his entire career bar this season there.

It might seem strange if he did want to abandon Arsenal, given how strong they currently are.

With that being said, the opportunity to play for the biggest side in his home nation would also be a big one. In any case, the Gunners will hope they can keep hold of him for some time.
