Edu launches £52m bid for prime Arsenal target as January transfer nears, with Gunners ‘waiting for a response’

Arsenal chief Edu and manager Mikel Arteta

Arsenal are reportedly ‘waiting for a response’ after technical director Edu sent Shakhtar Donetsk a €60million (£52.3m) bid for winger Mykhaylo Mudryk.

Mudryk has emerged into one of Arsenal’s top transfer targets for the January window amid his top form with Shakhtar. The attacker, who mainly operates on the left wing, has managed eight goals in 15 matches this season.

That includes Champions League goals against RB Leipzig and Celtic as Shakhtar finished third in Group F.

Mikel Arteta can already rely on Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe and Marquinhos in wide areas. But it seems he has come together with Edu to decide that a new star is required in those positions. This will help Arsenal take the next step and truly challenge Manchester City over the coming years.

Mudryk is towards the top of their wish list. And he has spoken a few times about his admiration for the Premier League and how he would be happy to join Arsenal.

The Gunners have now acted on their interest in Mudryk. According to Italian source Calciomercato, Edu has issued a proposal to Shakhtar over the 21-year-old’s transfer.

It is apparently in the region of £52.3m, which is not far off Shakhtar’s asking price. Arsenal appear confident this bid will be enough to win the race for Mudryk, who has also been linked with Leeds and Real Madrid.

Negotiations between Arsenal and Shakhtar have ‘accelerated’ recently and are now in the ‘decisive’ phase. Arsenal are ‘waiting for a response’ about their bid before opening contract discussions with Mudryk and his agent.

Arsenal in pole position for highly rated forward

The only thing that may stop Arsenal from signing Mudryk with their first offer is Shakhtar holding out for more money. While the £52.3m being proposed is close their valuation, they may feel a club like Real might be willing to pay more. Leeds, in contrast, have essentially been blown out of the water by Arsenal’s bid.

Mudryk’s switch to the Emirates this winter appears to be edging closer. Next, we just need some more established sources like Fabrizio Romano or The Athletic to confirm that a bid has been lodged.

Mudryk would certainly be an exciting capture for Arsenal. The star has made big strides this year and is now one of the most coveted players in the Ukrainian top flight.

The only trouble for Arsenal is that some of their fans may question the fee. Mudryk has never tested himself outside of his homeland. So his prospective move to England would come with a bit of risk.

Edu does not have as much money to play with as the likes of City or Newcastle. So if Mudryk joins for over £50m and flops, then Edu will come in for criticism.

This transfer pursuit is certainly one to keep an eye on in the coming weeks. Arsenal could get their first January deal done very early.
