Noa Lang has confirmed that Leeds United tried to sign him in summer 2021 and Arsenal made their own attempts in January 2022.
Club Brugge winger Lang is in demand ahead of the summer transfer window. He scored nine goals and made 15 assists from 48 games in the 2021-22 season. Now, the 22-year-old could be ready for the next step of his career.
He has been linked with a transfer to the Premier League, where Leeds and Arsenal are known admirers, while West Ham have also been mentioned.
Yet the interest from Leeds and Arsenal is more long-term. Reports last summer made no secret of Leeds’ desire to sign him.
Arsenal began to be linked shortly after the 2021 transfer window closed. But Noa Lang has now revealed the extent to which their interest went in the winter.
The Netherlands international has confirmed Arsenal considered him after the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Barcelona.
Lang told Het Laatste Nieuws: “Because one of them only really left at the last minute [Aubameyang], they wanted to hire someone quickly. But that was no longer possible.”
Nor did Lang deny the links he had with Leeds from a few months prior. In fact, he clarified that the West Yorkshire outfit made multiple attempts to sign him.
He said: “They were concrete, yes. Leeds made three offers. We even negotiated – they flew to the Netherlands.”
After those missed opportunities, though, this could be the summer in which Lang leaves Club Brugge. Although under contract until 2025, he is almost certain it is time to move on.
Asked if he will leave Club Brugge this summer, he replied: “In my head, yes. You never know what will happen, of course. But it’s really not planned to stay at Club for another year.
“I could have left last year. But I’m grateful that I stayed one more season. I really learned a lot this year, and now I’m more ready for the next step.”
As for where that may take him, he added: “To a very nice, big club. One that prefers to play in the Champions League. A club that hits the top.
“Look, I’m 22. Have all the time. I don’t have to go from Club to Real Madrid – that step is an incredible step. Moreover, you get there as a boy from Club.
“I first want to perform well elsewhere, and then sign like a big boy at the absolute world top. I’m sure I’ll get there anyway. I’m on schedule.”
Arsenal or alternative suitor could be best for Noa Lang
Given Lang’s comments, a move for Leeds may look less likely now. They only narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League this season.
Arsenal, meanwhile, were battling for a Champions League place until the end of the season. Ultimately, they missed out on fourth spot to Tottenham Hotspur.
However, the Gunners will have Europa League football on offer next season. They are building a promising project and still have the need for new attackers.
Hence, Lang may find Arsenal attractive if they come calling again in the summer.
Another suitor he has confirmed interest from is AC Milan. They have just won Serie A and will be in the Champions League next season, so could be even more appealing.
His future should become clearer over the coming weeks.
