Nuno Tavares transfer latest: Marseille move in doubt as Arsenal fail to agree to specific demand

Nuno Tavares #20 of Arsenal controls the ball

Olympique Marseille have reportedly made no progress in their pursuit of Arsenal full-back Nuno Tavares.

The French outfit have been long-term admirers of Tavares as they look to bolster their defence. The Portugese defender made 22 league appearances for Arsenal last season as he competed with Kieran Tierney for a place in the starting line-up. However, Tavares could be on the move with Marseille looking to land the star on loan.

According to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano, Marseille have been pursuing a deal for Tavares.

However, his most recent update suggests the club may now be looking at alternative options.

In a tweet, he reported that negotiations between both clubs had broken down as they failed to agree on one part of the deal.

Marseille were unimpressed as Arsenal refused to include a buy option in the loan deal.  as a result, it is believed they are now looking at elsewhere.

The club are looking at Lens right-back Jonathan Clauss as an option for the other side of defence. But now, they must once again enter the market to find a different option to Tavares.

Nuno Tavares has Arsenal future in doubt

Regardless of whether the Marseille move now collapses, it seems Tavares will be shown the exit door at Arsenal.

The club are said to be in pursuit of Oleksandr Zinchenko and Sergio Gomez from Anderlecht. The fact they are targeting left-backs suggest they are looking to move away from Tavares.

However, the reluctance to include a buy option means Arsenal still have plans for the Portuguese man. Tierney suffered numerous injury concerns last season, and is unreliable as the only option for that position.

Arsenal would be smart to keep Tavares until after a new left-back has been signed. A second option in the full-back role will be necessary throughout the 2022/23 campaign.

At 22 years old, it also makes sense why Arsenal don’t want to let Tavares leave permanently. He showed promising signs throughout last season, and with regular first-team football elsewhere for a year he could develop even further.

But for now, it seems Marseille are looking for a long-term option in this department. As a result, the Tavares loan deal seems doubtful.
