Real Madrid are reportedly planning a U-turn around Marco Asensio, which tells Arsenal, Newcastle United the fate of their pursuits.
Asensio has racked up 247 appearances for Real in his time at the club. Indeed, he has been part of some major triumphs for the Spanish giants.
In his time in Madrid, the forward has won three Champions League titles and three Spanish league titles, among other honours.
Indeed, he has been a successful player over the past six years. However, his role has not been a consistent one for the entirety of that period.
Of the 167 appearances he has made in La Liga for Real, Asensio been introduced from the bench in 75. In addition, the majority of his Champions League appearances have come from the bench.
This season, he has particularly struggled for game time. Indeed, he is yet to start a game in the league, and has only done so once in the Champions League.
The form of attackers such as Karim Benzema, Vinicius Jr and Federico Valverde has led to his diminishing role.
As such, it seems he is no longer an asset that Real need to retain. Instead, they could see him leave the club and free up space for another player.
Asensio contract decision made
With that being said, it was recently revealed that the Spanish giants would not be renewing the Spaniard’s contract. Indeed, with it running out at the end of the season, he would be free to move to another club.
Adding a player who has had success in one of Europe’s biggest sides would be a bonus for both of those teams. What’s more, Asensio is still only 26 and should have his prime years ahead of him.
However, a Real U-turn could put a dampener on any of those plans. Spanish news outlet Ser Deportivos reports that Real are planning to offer the forward an improved three-year extension.
That is after Asensio turned down their last offer, which was when the reported decision from Real not to renew his deal was made.
Still time for move to occur
There is still time for a move to one of the Premier League sides, or elsewhere, to occur. Given his fringe role, Asensio could decide to leave Real anyway.
That would, of course, be a bonus for whichever side managed to snare him.
Indeed, Arsenal’s wing pair of Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka are in excellent form. However, there is not much in the way of depth behind them in their positions.
Furthermore, Arsenal have been on the hunt for an extra midfield player. Signing Asensio could go a long way to sorting both of those matters.
The Spaniard also seems the perfect type of player for Newcastle. Their upwards trajectory of late has been as clear as day, with the Magpies currently within the Premier League’s top four.
However, they are not able to just splash the cash on huge players without Financial Fair Play regulations hindering them.
As such, adding a quality player for no cost would be a great option, and Asensio would be a quality player to add to the top squad that they are slowly putting together
