Arsenal, Newcastle see Sergej Milinkovic-Savic offers knocked back, as Chelsea offered exchange deal

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic receiving instructions from Maurizio Sarri

Arsenal have reportedly made an offer for Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as Mikel Arteta pushes ahead with his transfer plans.

The Gunners have wrapped up the signing of Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City. The Brazilian has signed in a £45m deal from City, with the player penning a five-year deal at The Emirates. But Edu is already working on the next deal, as per reports in Italy.

According to Italian outlet ilmessaggero.it, Arsenal have submitted an offer for Serbia international Milinkovic-Savic.

The report claims that the offer is thought to be worth between €50m and €55m (£47m). The Italian outlet also claim Newcastle have made  an offer in the same bracket, both have been knocked back.

The Serie A side are hoping for a fee closer to £69m with Milinkovic-Savic’s contract due to expire in 2024.

Lazio wanted more than £86m for the Serbia international before the pandemic. The Rome-based club are also understood to have pushed the midfielder towards Chelsea.

Todd Boehly is overseeing a rebuilding project at Stamford Bridge this summer. And Lazio were understood to be hoping to get Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Emerson Palmieri as part of the deal.

Talks though “are heated” for the one-time Man Utd target, claims the source.

Milinkovic-Savic’s goal threat

The player’s agent Mateja Kezman is a former Chelsea player and he has said that his client is looking to move on this summer.

Milinkovic-Savic has spent the last seven years at the Stadio Olimpico after leaving Belgian side Genk.

Arsenal were believed to be preparing to make a move for Milinkovic-Savic earlier in the summer, claimed the Corriere dello Sport.

The future of Swiss star Granit Xhaka is up in the air at The Emirates. And boss Mikel Arteta is looking at midfield alternatives.

With over 200 appearances under his belt in Serie A, Milinkovic-Savic may well be the experienced midfielder that Arteta wants.

The powerful midfielder also has 48 goals and 41 assists in the Italian top division. He certainly presents more of a goal threat than Xhaka, although Lazio’s value on the player seems high.

Leicester’s Youri Tielemans and Wolves ace Ruben Neves are also targets and Milinkovic-Savic could prove to be the best value for money.
