A shock swap deal involving a fringe player could be the gateway for Arsenal to secure a major coup addition, it has been reported.
The way Mikel Arteta has his Gunners side playing at the moment means there is little need for rotation in the starting XI. As well as that, their lack of European football has resulted in less opportunities for squad players.
Those factors combined mean summer signing Martin Odegaard is stuck with substitute appearances for now.
The 22-year-old was bought for a huge €35m fee from Real Madrid. A signing this big would usually walk into their new team.
And he did for a while, but the last four games have passed without a start for the Norway international.
The youthful recruitment plan from those in charge at the Emirates is positive in this situation, because Odegaard has plenty of years ahead of him.
But he could be sacrificed to allow the very much needed signing of Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak to be made.
That’s according to Todo Fichajes. They report that Odegaard is willing to return to Sociedad to find regular playing time.
This is something which former Gunner and current Sociedad goalkeeper, Mat Ryan, revealed after joining the Spanish club.
Odegaard’s love of his old club, where he spent the 2019/20 season on loan, means there could be a deal to done next summer.
The report notes that campaign was the most prolific of the midfielder’s career. He scored seven times and assisted a further nine goals in 36 matches.
Odegaard is clearly not essential to Arsenal right now, whereas a new striker is paramount for 2022.
Isak is the desired man
That’s why Sport Witness, citing reports in the Spanish press, claim that Isak is now the ‘total priority’ for their transfer business.
The Sweden international bagged a goal every other game in La Liga last season. And he went on to impress for his nation at Euro 2020.
His start to this season hasn’t been quite as rapid. Nonetheless, Sociedad are riding high at the top of the table in Spain.
The 22-year-old frontman has still scored three league goals in 10 appearances, as well as a further two finishes in the Europa League.
