Signing of Brighton man would strike fear into Arsenal’s rivals, says pundit

The signing of Tariq Lamptey from Brighton this month would strike fear into Arsenal’s opponents, according to one pundit.

Former Chelsea defender Lamptey has been in inspired form for the Seagulls this season. The 21-year-old right-back has made 11 Premier League appearances this season after missing the start of the campaign with injury. The right-back is maturing into one of the most exciting young defenders in the top flight.

Arsenal are understood to be watching his progress, along with a number of other teams.

In the summer Sky Sports reported that Spurs were keen on the England Under-21 star. Arsenal have since joined the player’s list of admirers with Spanish outlet Fichajes claiming in October he was a target.

While, speaking on the Transfer Window podcast last month, journalist Duncan Castles claimed Arsenal have reignited their interest in Lamptey. He claimed the Gunners were exploring the “parameters of the deal”.

And pundit Noel Whelan believes a move to Arsenal would help the Gunners build a “phenomenal” right-hand side along with Bukayo Saka.

Whelan told Football Insider: “You can see what they’re doing. They’re trying to get that youth into the side and sign the best youth players around.

“Lamptey is very exciting, very quick. You can imagine him and Saka down that right-hand side. It would be phenomenal – try and keep up with those two guys.

Reports suggest Arsenal and England forward Bukayo Saka would be willing to move to Liverpool, if the chance arose.

“He’s done enough, he is an exciting player. It won’t only be Arsenal looking at him. There will be other clubs sniffing around him if he keeps playing the way he’s playing.

Brighton won’t stand in way of Lamptey

“A really good young player. Arsenal are showing the intention of not wanting to stop where they are.

“They’re wanting to progress, bring new players in, strengthen the squad and push forward towards Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea.

“That’s where you’re used to seeing Arsenal, in that top four.”

According to Castles, Brighton will  not stand in the way of Lamptey, if the Gunners meet his asking price.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has already signed one player from Brighton. Brighton insisted on a price tag of £50m for defender Ben White and the deal was made at the end of July.

Lamptey is under contract until 2025 after signing from Chelsea in January 2020.
