Arsenal submit £60m bid for midfielder with enormous potential, as negotiations reach ‘key stages’

Moises Caicedo, James Maddison, Brighton, Leicester City, January 2023

Arsenal have made an offer to Brighton to sign Moises Caicedo, having put more money on the table than Chelsea have so far for the midfielder, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Caicedo is one of the most highly-rated young midfielders in the Premier League at present. Brighton certainly unearthed a gem when they brought him to England from Independiente Del Valle in his native Ecuador.

This season, Caicedo has played 21 times in all competitions. All of his appearances have been as a starter and he has lasted 90 minutes in all but three of them.

In the process, the defensive midfielder has caught the eye of some big clubs. He has admirers at Chelsea, for example, where he could move to reunite with head coach Graham Potter.

But Arsenal have also been in contention for Caicedo’s signature as they aim to upgrade their midfield. TEAMtalk has been told that the Premier League leaders do want to add a midfielder if they can and Caicedo is one of the names on their shortlist.

Now, they have stepped up their pursuit by putting pressure on Brighton. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have now “submitted” a £60million bid to sign Caicedo.

Their offer is greater than the verbal proposal of £55m that Chelsea saw rejected earlier this month. Hence, Arsenal could get their own back after the Mykhaylo Mudryk saga earlier this month.

According to Romano, Brighton still “hope to keep” Caicedo, but with Arsenal “pushing”, negotiations are reaching their “key stages”.

According to a separate update from David Ornstein, though, Brighton have rejected the £60m bid.

Moises Caicedo could be future of Arsenal midfield

Arsenal already have Thomas Partey, Granit Xhaka, Mohamed Elneny and Albert Sambi Lokonga at the base of their midfield. Partey and Xhaka have been particularly reliable this season.

However, it is a position that Arsenal will need to evolve if they are to preserve their success for the long term. Xhaka and Elneny are already 30 years old and Partey will reach that age too before the start of next season.

As a 21-year-old, Caicedo could represent the future of Arsenal’s midfield if they can bring him in. He has already been performing at a high standard for Brighton, but has the potential to get even better.

Arsenal would just have to work out if they would have an immediate place for him in their lineup, or if they will be easing him in more gradually. If they are putting that much money on the table, it seems they have some big plans in mind for him.

Hence, he would seemingly be a smart investment by Arsenal, who have already signed one player from Brighton this month in the shape of Leandro Trossard. They also poached Benjamin White from the same club back in the summer of 2021.

Brighton still have Caicedo under contract until 2025. Ideally, they want to keep hold of him. However, many of their talents have progressed to bigger and better things in recent years.

They should be able to turn a big profit by selling Caicedo, so it is worth keeping an eye on any developments regarding his future. He is capable of taking the next step, but it might be a matter of deciding when.
