Ian Wright thinks Arsenal will miss out on UCL glory

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has said he would love to see the ‘King of Rome’ Tammy Abraham in a Gunners shirt next season.

Abraham left Chelsea for Serie A last summer and he has “lit it up”, according to Wright. It’s hard to disagree, with Abraham blasting 15 goals in 29 Serie A appearances. The 24-year-old has also grabbed three assists after his £34m switch.

The England striker was linked with the Gunners last summer, before opting to move to Italy. Ultimately though there was not enough desire from Edu to land the former Bristol City man.

And according to Italian journalist Rudy Galetti, via the Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa were in “advanced talks” over the star.

His record of 30 goals in 82 Chelsea games was not enough though for any club in the Premier League to take a punt on him.

That led to Jose Mourinho taking the Camberwell-born player to Italy. And Abraham has not looked back.

Arsenal will again be in the market for a frontman this summer with Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah both running out of contract. They may have to move this summer for Abraham too because Chelsea have inserted a buyback clause in the deal.

That clause can only be exercised by the Blues at £68m from 2023.

Wright is in no doubt who Arsenal should sign this summer and says Abraham has gone beyond his expectations in Rome.

“Tammy Abraham. The king of Rome,” Wright said on his podcast Wrighty’s House. The way Tammy has gone over there, he’s lit it up.

“I couldn’t see Mourinho taking Tammy there and it working like it’s worked. This is where Mourinho baffles me, where he’s said ‘I’ve all people, I’m going to take Tammy. I’m going to take him to Roma and put him in this team’.

Arsenal to let 14 players go this summer

Arsenal to let 14 players go this summer

Arsenal are reportedly going to let an incredible 14 players leave Emirates Stadium this summer.

“I remember his first game. He was magnificent from the off. Everything that’s going on around him, it just feels like he’s that guy.

‘We tried to get’ Abraham

“We tried to get him, Arsenal, and when you look at how Arsenal play now, how Tammy is playing, you say to yourself, ‘Mikel [Arteta], you see the vision!’. When it was happening you think, ‘Yeah, I could see it happening,’ because he ripped us to shreds (when he played for Chelsea).”

Corriere dello Sport, via Sport Witness, claimed recently that Abraham is thinking about a quick return to England.

They claim that the striker “is worth more than €40m plus bonuses spent by Roma in the summer”.

What’s more they also suggest Chelsea’s buyback clause “doesn’t seem disproportionate”.

And for the forward that news will be welcomed because he “would like to go home one day through the front door to conquer the showroom of his Premier League”.

Wright believes he may have his pick of destinations too.

“They all must be looking at him [now], they’ve got to be,” he added.
