Arsenal are closing on the signing of Youri Tielemans with a swap deal with Leicester on the cards, Nottingham Forest are eyeing two more big-name signings, while Thursday’s Transfer Gossip has details of some major changes at Aston Villa.
YOURI TIELEMANS NEARS ARSENAL MOVE AS LEICESTER ASK FOR SWAP
Arsenal are advancing in their efforts to bring Youri Tielemans to Emirates Stadium amid talk Leicester are asking for a player exchange.
The Gunners have invested heavily so far this summer with Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Fabio Vieira and Matt Turner taking their spending through £100m.
They are expected to still be active though before the window shuts, with a deal for Tielemans high on their agenda.
The Belgian has just a year left on his deal and is reportedly up for grabs at around £30m-£35m.
However, despite having a clear passage to his signature, Arsenal are yet to push through his signing.
That has led some to suggest Mikel Arteta may have doubts over his physicality and toughness to play in the Gunners’ midfield.
However, Fabrizio Romano has spoken out to deny such claims. And he insists the delay is more down to Arsenal looking to sell players first.
Now, though, it seems like the deal could be about to take a major leap forward.
Youri Tielemans, Bernd Leno swap deal
As per the Daily Mirror, Leicester are open to a swap deal involving unwanted Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno.
The German keeper finds himself down to third choice at Arsenal after Turner was brought in as Aaron Ramsdale’s deputy.
A move to Fulham is close to being agreed.
But now Leicester are keen to bring him to the King Power Stadium amid claims Kasper Schmeichel is to depart.
The long-serving keeper is pushing to depart amid claims a move to Nice is in the offing.
And that leaves Brendan Rodgers with a big hole to fill – and not a lot of money to spend.
What's next for Youri Tielemans?
Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans is still being linked with Manchester United and Arsenal.
As such, the paper speculates that a swap deal could be on the cards to suit all parties.
Arsenal value Leno at around £10m, meaning they would need a cash adjustment worth around £20m.
Leno has made 125 appearances since signing for Arsenal, but only eight of those came last season.
FOREST IN FOR MORGAN GIBBS-WHITE AND WILLIAM CARVALHO
Nottingham Forest are set to continue with their summer spending blitz after targeting deals for two more stars.
The Tricky Trees have brought in 11 new players so far, with Taiwo Awoniyi (£18.4m) and Neco Williams (£18m) the costliest.
However, it is the capture of Jesse Lingard which has perhaps grabbed the most headlines. Here, skipper Joe Worrall has lauded the England star and explained what he will bring to the club.
So far, Forest have splashed out around £90m on their new arrivals. However, their next two signings look set to see the club soar through the £100m barrier.
To that end, the Daily Mirror claims they are hot on the trail of Morgan Gibbs-White.
The England U21 star finds himself at a career crossroads after an excellent season on loan with Sheffield United. He scored 12 goals in 37 appearances to bring him to the attention of several sides.
And with Wolves willing to sell for around £25m, the likes of Everton and Crystal Palace are being linked.
However, the Mirror reckons a move to Forest looks on the cards, with Steve Cooper’s side willing to meet the asking price.
The Daily Mail also reckons Forest are plotting a move for William Carvalho.
The Portuguese midfielder has been with Real Betis for the past four seasons, but his deal is due to expire next summer.
As such, they reckon he will leave the Andalucians for around £10m.
RUTHLESS STEVEN GERRARD STRIPS TYRONE MINGS OF VILLA CAPTAINCY
Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard has taken the captain’s armband off Tyrone Mings – and installed John McGinn in his place.
The Villa boss indicated upon taking over that he would review the situation in the summer with Mings the current occupier.
And good to his word, Mings has now lost the armband with Scotland midfielder McGinn now handed that honour.
It gets worse for the England defender too, with Emiliano Martinez named vice-captain. And veteran star Ashley Young has been named as club captain.
Explaining his thinking, Gerrard insists the decision will help Mings improve his game.
Gerrard said: “Naturally, I have had to have a discussion with Tyrone Mings and have explained my reasons for making this decision.
“More importantly, I believe that not having the responsibility of the captaincy will allow Tyrone to focus more on his own game which can only benefit him and the team.”
Reacting to the decision, Mings insists he is at ease with the verdict.
Taking to social media, he tweeted: “For me this isn’t about John or I, it’s about what’s right for Aston Villa.
“I have no issues with the manager’s decision; I’ve loved leading this team. Anyone who knows @jmcginn7 knows how infectious he is and it will be an honour to play underneath his captaincy.”
Mings faces a fight for his Aston Villa shirt this season with Diego Carlos joining Ezri Konsa and Calum Chambers as the club’s four central defensive options.
