Arsenal transfer latest: Another Pepe deal in the pipeline but release clause a problem for Porto striker

Pepe FC Porto striker

Arsenal are reportedly lining up a move to bring another Pepe to The Emirates this summer, as they prepare to swoop for the Porto striker.

The club already have record signing Nicolas Pepe on board, having coughed up a whopping £72million to sign the Ivory Coast international back in 2019.

However, they are now looking to get the winger off their wage bill after a fairly disastrous spell in north London. Indeed, Pepe, has scored just 27 goals in 112 games for the club, adding 21 assists.

Arsenal’s biggest issue at the moment, however, is trying to find a club to offload him to. So far there have not been many suitors coming forward, although a proposed move to Sevilla has potential.

The hope is, if Pepe can be moved then that will open up an attacking spot in Mikel Arteta’s squad. And that’s where the other Pepe comes in.

The 23-year-old Brazilian is highly regarded in Portugal, but he will not come cheap.

Newspaper A Bola states that the Gunners made an approach for the South American earlier this summer while they were finalising a deal for his teammate Fabio Vieira. However, they were told at the time they would need to pay his exit clause of £60m.

The report adds that Arsenal then made a cheeky offer of £25.3m, which was instantly knocked back by Porto.

Indeed, the Portuguese giants want at least double that figure to even consider doing business.

Arsenal may to wait for Porto man

At this stage, there have been no second offers forthcoming from Arteta’s men. However, Arsenal are still keen on bringing the player to north London.

A Bola adds that, with a summer deal now unlikely, the Gunners will watch how Pepe goes in the Champions League over the coming months. From there, they will decide whether to potentially move for the attacker in January. They could also wait until the summer of 2023.

Arsenal can probably afford to wait, given how good their attack looked at Crystal Palace in their opener.

Gabriel Jesus looked an absolute bargain at Selhurst Park and should certainly be good for 20 goals this season. Arteta can also call on Eddie Nketiah off the bench, who had an excellent finish to last season.

The Gunners are next in action on Saturday at 3pm when they host Leicester City at The Emirates.
