Arsenal transfer news: Gunners step up bid to beat Newcastle to £25m-rated Lens ace Seko Fofana

Arsenal are reportedly ready to step up their bid to beat Newcastle and PSG to the summer signing of Lens midfielder Seko Fofana.
The box-to-box midfielder played a key role in a Lens side that finished seventh in Ligue 1 last season, scoring eight goals in 38 appearances.
Fofana’s performances have led to several clubs showing an interest in snapping up his services.
In England, the Gunners are doing battle with cash-rich Newcastle, while in his homeland PSG are monitoring the player’s progress.
And according to L’Equipe, Lens are ready to do business for a player who will cost around £25million.
Arsenal have already been active in the summer market, with Fabio Vieira arriving from Porto. However, Vieira is expected to feature in a more attacking midfield role, leaving room for the addition of Fofana.
The Gunners had to use Martin Odegaard in a deeper role last season due to Thomas Partey’s injury woes.
Adaptable Fofana gives Arteta more options
However, landing Fofana will give the north London club a more versatile option who can fulfill several roles.
European football also returns to the club next season, meaning greater squad depth will be key for Mikel Arteta.
As for Newcastle’s interest, they are likely to be able to offer Fofana a better financial package. But with no European football on offer, the Gunners should be able to win that race – unless the player fancies remaining in France with PSG.
